Oscars Betting Points Towards Mickey Rourke For Best Actor
Tuesday 13 January 2009 at 12:02
Mickey Rourke was a surprise winner in the Best Actor category to many in Sunday's Golden Globes when he pipped Sean Penn to the award. As a result it is now Rourke who is favourite to win the Best Actor Oscar.
Mickey Rourke To Win First Oscar?
Mickey Rourke can be backed at 8/11 with Paddy Power to win the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in The Wrestler, directed by Darren Aronofsky. Mickey Rourke plays Randy ‘The Ram' Robinson, a washed up wrestler who makes his way round the independent circuit.
Rourke Involved In Controversy
Rourke recently hinted that he took Steroids to bulk up for the part, saying ‘When I'm a wrestler, I behave like a wrestler' in response to a question about taking steroids. Whether or not this affects his chances of picking up an Oscar remains to be seen but he is still a fair bet at 8/11 with Paddy Power.
Penn Looking Oscar Material
Rourke won the Golden Globe at the expense of Sean Penn, who looks the only credible contender according to the betting. Sean Penn is 7/4 with Paddy Power to win the Best Actor Oscar for his role in Milk. Penn plays Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay elected official. He was assassinated along with the Mayor at the time. This looks more of an Oscar favourite than the wrestler and we may just see Penn win the Oscar and 7/4 with Paddy Power is a value bet.
Two Veterans Could Win Best Actor
Other names that are prominent in the betting include Clint Eastwood for Gran Torino (which he also directed) and Eastwood is an 8/1 shot with Paddy Power, as is Frank Langella for his role in Frost/Nixon where he plays Richard Nixon.
