2008 European Open Champion Ross Fisher advertised his claims for defending his title this week with a runner-up spot on Sunday to Paul Casey in the prestigious BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Fisher fired a final round 64 to just miss out on taking that title by one shot but it has elevated him to 12/1 favourite this week as he looks to retain the European Open at the London Club. 12/1 is available with most bookmakers including Stan James and Blue Square.
Major Winners Take Their Chance In European Open
A number of former Major winners will be in action this week, emphasising the quality in depth of this tournament Two time US Open Champion Retief Goosen tees it up in Europe for the second week running and at odds of 28/1 with Sportingbet his supporters will be hoping for better luck than last week's missed cut at Wentworth.
Angel Cabrera won the US Masters in April to complete a Major double after his victory in the US open in 2007. Like Goosen, Cabrera also missed the cut at Wentworth but his Masters victory came on the back of two missed cuts so his supporters should not be deterred by last week's disappointment. The Argentinean is a 28/1 chance this week with Betfred and Paddy Power.
US Stars Try Their Luck In Europe
Two other Major winners who line up in the European Open are Ben Curtis and John Daly.
Ben Curtis won the British Open in 2003 and despite two PGA tour victories in 2006 has found the consistency expected of a Major winner hard to achieve. However, things have looked promising so far in 2009 with decent performances on both sides of the Atlantic and at 45/1 with Boylesports he could go well.
Also playing this week is 1991 PGA and 1995 British Open Champion John Daly . Daly is currently taking a break from the US Tour and this will be his seventh event in Europe this season. Already a joint runner up at the Italian Open, Daly could well do better this week than his odds of 125/1 would suggest. Coral are one of the firms offering that price and this looks well worth an each-way wager.
