St Jude Classic Betting And News
Tuesday 09 June 2009 at 16:57
The St Jude Classic has a long history stretching back to 1985 and in that time it has been won by the likes of Greg Norman, Fred Couples and Nick Price. Justin Leonard is the defending champion.
Mickelson Makes Return To PGA Tour
World ranked number two Phil Mickelson is very familiar with being in the media spotlight but will surely never have experienced anything like the week he is in for this week as the world's golfing press will look for a quote as to how he is coping with the illness affecting his wife, Amy.
Mickelson has decided to make a two week return to the Tour but the rest of his playing schedule is under review as his wife receives further treatment for cancer.
Mickelson may be inspired by the well-wishers etc and the bookmakers certainly believe that his game will be not affected and have made him the 12/1 favourite to lift the St Jude title. Boylesports and Totesport are standout at 12/1 with the majority of the other firms only offering 10/1 about Mickelson returning with a win.
Two-Time Winner Leonard Fancied For More Success
As already mentioned Justin Leonard won this title last year but he also won the event in 2005 and had three other top ten finishes from his ten starts here in Memphis. A 50% record of top ten finishes is an amazing stat and bookmakers have obviously factored that into their thinking by making Leonard second favourite this week. The 36 year-old from Texas is generally a 14/1 shot this week including with Bet365, Stan James and Coral
Toms Looking To Get Back On Winning Trail
Another dual winner playing this week is David Toms.
Winner here in 2003 and 2004, Toms also has a great overall record at TPC Southwind but is without a win on tour of any kind since 2006. The twelve times Tour winner has had some health issues over the last couple of years but appears back to full fitness now and is looking to break a near three year losing streak.
Toms is a 16/1 shot this week with Paddy Power and William Hill and looks likely to contend yet again on a course that suits his game very well.
