David Beckham England World Cup Squad Odds Drift After He Is Ruled Out For The Season
Monday 15 March 2010 at 10:25
David Beckham's World Cup dreams are in tatters after he tore his Achilles tendon playing for AC Milan on Sunday. He is unlikely to be able to run or kick a ball for at least three months and the injury could even threaten his career.
David Beckham As Good As Ruled Out Of World Cup
The chances of Beckham being fit for the World Cup are remote and that is reflected in his odds, he is currently 24/1 on Betfair to be on the plane to South Africa. That means he is four times less likely than Michael Owen to be in the England World Squad, Owen is currently just over 5/1 on Betfair to be in Fabio Capello's 23 man squad which is announced on June 1st, just two and a half months away. This injury is without doubt bad news for Beckham but it could be good news for several other players, one of which is James Milner, who now looks to be assured a place in the England World Cup Squad, he is now just 1/9 with 888Sport and Blue Square to make the squad.
Many Players Fighting Over One Extra Spot Provided By Beckham Injury
Other players who could benefit from Beckham's injury include Shaun Wright Phillips, Theo Walcott, Aaron Lennon, Joe Cole and Stewart Downing. The three who would be direct replacements for Beckham are Wright Phillips who is now just 2/7 with 888Sport to be in the squad, Walcott who is down to 3/10 with 888Sport and Lennon, who would be a certainty but there is a doubt about his troublesome groin injury that has kept him out all year, he is now 4/6 with 888Sport. Joe Cole and Stewart Downing would usually be used on the left wing but are both versatile and it is Downing who is slightly more likely at 5/4 with 888Sport whilst Cole is 11/8 with 888Sport.
