Next Labour Leader Betting Odds Point To A Match Between David Milliband And Ed Milliband
Sunday 25 July 2010 at 07:48
There are five candidates in the running to be next Labour Leader and to succeed Gordon Brown. At the head of the betting are the brothers Milliband and in truth the winner should come from the sons of Mrs Milliband. Ladbrokes offer a huge 8/1 that the next Labour Leader will not have the surname Milliband.
The Milliband Brothers
Former foreign secretary David was predicted to be a shoe in for the job as the party wished to distance itself from a disastrous General Election campaign. He has the gravitas and intellect and had been an effective member of the Government and importantly there were no major hiccoughs on his watch either at home or abroad. Hilary Clinton even admitted to a crush on David which didn't do his candidacy any harm. However as all bettors know when you are favourite it is yours to lose and political commentators are always looking “to get” the favourite. He is now 8/13 with ExtraBet and SkyBet.
We don't suppose that either he or his supporters envisaged his younger brother Ed throwing his hat into the ring and then getting so much Union support from two of the most influential trade unions. The GMB followed Unison in pledging their public vote to him. The affect of this has resulted in the price being cut for Ed becoming next Labour leader, he can be backed at 7/4 with Ladbrokes, SkyBet, and VC Bet. Considering he was around 11/2 at the beginning of the year then it seems Ed has the momentum and looks the value in the Labour Leader Market.
Labour Leader Candidates
Three other candidates are still in the running, Ed Balls is 22/1 with Bet 365 and Paddy Power but many grassroot Labour voters see the MP for Morley and Outwood as too confrontational. Labour Shadow Health secretary Andy Burnham is 56.0 with Betfair and Michael Portillo's sofa colleague Diane Abbot is the outsider with no real chance at 66/1 with Bet 365 and Coral.
