Next Sunderland Manager Odds Have Hughes Better Fancied Than O Neill
Thursday 01 December 2011 at 10:08
The bookies have been offering Next Sunderland Odds since Monday, clearly thinking that Steve Bruce would go on to lose his job and the bookies were proved correct on Wednesday evening when Bruce was finally let go after two years in charge at Sunderland. The early favourite was Martin O’Neill but the punters have quickly spoken and it seems Mark Hughes is actually the most likely choice.
O’Neill On The Drift To Get The Sunderland Job
Martin O’Neill was around 1/2 with the bookies to become the Next Sunderland Manager before Steve Bruce was even sacked but once Bruce left Sunderland there didn’t really seem much interest in O’Neill from punters, OLBG tipster Online Trader was quick to lay O’Neill on Betfair:
“Just managed to get a little bit matched laying MON @ 1.9 as I certainly do not see him going there.”
Which he followed up with:
“My lay of MON is based on gut feeling and also that historically laying the 1st favourite for these markets usually pays dividends, I don't know how drawn out this one is likely to be but hopefully it will go on for a while as they do provide great entertainment and makes SSN a must watch for the old "rumour mill stories.”
It looks like Online Trader made the right move as Martin O’Neill has been drifting since then and is now best odds of 7/4 with Stan James.
Hughes And Benitez Look Only Other Contenders
The other name that has been strongly linked with Sunderland is Mark Hughes, who has been without a club since leaving Fulham in the summer. Some punters took 10/1 on Wednesday that Hughes would be the next Sunderland manager and they will be extremely happy as the current odds available on the Welshman are just 11/8 with Victor Chandler. OLBG tipster redboy is one of those who has gone for Hughes:
“Usual suspects will be lined up and I can see Benitez being in the frame but Mark Hughes has been out for a while and this might be the "big" club to get him busy again whether it will appease those fans remains to be seen.”
It looks mainly a two horse race and if there is a third contender involved it is certainly Rafa Benitez, who came close to getting the Aston Villa job in the summer. mercer is one of the OLBG tipsters who has backed Benitez and those looking to join him may be surprised that they are getting odds as hig as 12/1 with Bet365. the next best contender appears to be Ole Gunnar Solksjaer who is 20/1 with Paddy Power followed by Eric Black at 25/1 with Bet365.
