Next Tottenham Manager Betting Odds Point Towards Mourinho Or Moyes
Friday 10 February 2012 at 16:04
Now that the dust has settled on Fabio Capello’s resignation as England manager the odds are also beginning to settle on both the Next England Manager and Next Tottenham Manager. They are both strongly linked markets with Spurs manager Harry Redknapp the 2/5 favourite for the England job with BetVictor and that means it should pay to take a look at who the candidates are for the job at White Hart Lane.
Can Spurs Afford Jose Mourinho?
The name dividing Spurs fans at the moment is Jose Mourinho, some see the Real Madrid boss as a born winner who the likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric will want to stay and play under whilst others argue that he is an anit-football, win at all cost style manager who won’t play ‘the Tottenham way’. The bookies are also divided slightly, BetVictor are the shortest with 11/4 on offer whilst you can get 9/2 with William Hill currently. Mourinho may have the pick of jobs this summer if he leaves Real Madrid and he may look for a team a rung above Spurs who can offer higher wages for both himself and the players he signs. David Moyes is the only other manager with single figure odds, the Everton boss is 7/1 with BetVictor and he would surely jump at the opportunity to work with the resources offered by Tottenham. Moyes’ appointment would follow the safe appointment that was made when Redknapp joined, sticking with a talented, domestic based manager who has always done a good job at other clubs and giving Moyes this chance could end up being a masterstroke from Daniel Levy, but it could also blow up in his face which is why Moyes is a 7/1 chance not a 2/1 chance.
Brendan Rodgers And Didier Deschamps Look Overpriced
Out of the other names in the betting Brendan Rodgers seems to be a popular choice with Spurs fans, more so than David Moyes as far as domestic appointments go, yet the Swansea boss is available at 16/1 with Ladbrokes. He has just signed a new contract with Swansea but that probably just increases his buyout clause and since he has turned a team assembled from the lower divisions into one of the best footballing teams in the Premiership he certainly seems the right sort of appointment for Spurs and he only has two games less Champions League experience than Moyes so that shouldn’t count against him. Another name who looks overpriced is Marseille manager Didier Deschamps. The Frenchman spent time in the Premiership with Chelsea and is a respected young manager, the fact that he is 25/1 with BetVictor and William Hill looks a bit odds considering you can get shorter odds on the likes of Gus Poyet (who Daniel Levy has already sacked once) and Tim Sherwood who only manages the youth team.
