...starts on Sat 18th August. Two weeks to go then until the next major tour so I thought I'd get the thread up and running.
Looks to be a traditional vuelta course with plenty of summit finishes and mountain passes for the climbers after a TT orientated TDF.
Who are we looking at finishing on the top of the podium?
Contador, Cobo, Froome, J-Rod, Kreuziger are the ones that stand out from the provisional lists. The two Colombians lads at Sky have been in good form too but will surely support Froome in this.
Will be interesting to see how Contador goes. Has been out for a while but he has had this to look forward to for quite sometime now. _________________ @ KanKeano_OLBG | Twitter |

Sergio Henao from team Sky is a decent climber.
He shot clear in the Tour Of Poland on a climb inside the last 5k and only just got caught on the line.
I might have a dabble on him to win a mountain stage
Have AG2R got any different riders, their team looks the same as what was in France
David Moncutie of Cofidis had a very poor Tour and he might win a stage here too
Surprised to see Jurgen Van Den Broeck riding here
Robert Gesink had a shocker in France and will want to redeem himself here
Overall it looks like a decent enough field but the lack of top sprinters will make the flatter stages harder to predict |

I'm not too shocked to be honest. I think the Course Layout for this years Vuelta suits VDB much more than the Tour De France he has just rode. I think he has ambitions of a Tour Podium with the lack of Individual Time Trialing and plenty of Summit Finishes. I don't personally think VDB will get a Top 3 but he is in good form and who knows. He misses that kick in the Mountains and is a notorious Wheel Tracker which at times holds him back. If he developed a knack of kicking in the Mountains, he could actually do some real damage.

Yea I agree that the Sky boys could be used as Domestiques for Froome dependant on how the race pans out, especially Uran. But they will certainly be nothing like the Domesiques Wiggins had available to him in the Tour De France. As for the overall names there, Kreuziger obviously doesn't ride, and I think the defending Champion Cobo doesn't have a chance of repeating his feat last year to be honest.
Main reason is that this years line up is much stronger. Froome could have won this race last year and despite an action filled calender this year he will have all the freedom he requires. VDB will be going in to the race in much better condition than he did last year when finishing 8th. Alberto Contador returns from his Ban eager I am sure. While Robert Gesink will be desperate to redeem his form following another poor Tour De France. This is without mentioning the very strong looking Joaquim Rodriguez, who didn't really figure for the overall last year. He looked great at the Giro and only lost by 16 seconds, as well as the very impressive 3rd placed finisher at the Giro in Thomas De Gendt who at just 25 looks like one of Cyclings most promising talents. He rode the ride of the Giro for me and has looked strong.
Overall I do believe this race is much stronger than last year and I can't even see Cobo getting on the Podium to be honest.
Looking at the team selections though Saxobank definitely look the strongest for me personally. Navarro, Sorensen, Paulinho. Contador definitely has some very handy guys come the mountains. VDB will probably have Bart De Clerq as his main man while Froome only really has a couple of riders to choose from come the climbing. Although Sky haven't got a bad team by any means, and are probably only outdone by Saxobank in my opinion who I think look well balanced, obviously preparing for this race and Contadors Return.
A severe lack of sprinters means some big break away gaps early on I feel. Some teams will be here solely for stage wins so that is something worth keeping an eye on. Should be a very good Vuelta though with this line up, Could be the best one for a few years. Glad ITV4 will also have the highlights.
Anyone else got any early thoughts? |

Valverde has confirmed his participation in the race for Movistar which will help Cobo out in his defence. _________________ @ KanKeano_OLBG | Twitter |

Yep I completely agree Manafana.
Look forward to your bets for this years Vuelta. Will you be doing a Preview mate? Or just bet selections for this one?
Cheers |

Small bet on a top 3 finish tonight for Team Katusha in the team time trial. Have some good TT riders within their squad and they have some good finishes in the rarely raced discipline this season.
2nd in the Giro over a longer course but only 2 secs outside of Greenedge and Omega Pharma Lotto recently on the Eneco Tour over 18K.
Katusha top 3 - 3.50 _________________ @ KanKeano_OLBG | Twitter |
