The Bibury Cup is often a competitive three-year-old handicap that attracts unexposed, progressive middle distance performers, though it is fair to say that one or two come into this year's renewal with either a little bit to prove or not looking obviously well treated - previous winners include Firecrest, Arrive, Sentinel, Albinus, Hi Calypso and Vulcanite.
The selection is a son of Dansili who is who is a half brother to high-class 7-14f winner (including the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes) Hi Calypso, very useful dual 12f winner Warringah (Listed placed), quite useful 8-12f winner Jedi and 12f 3yo winners Cops And Robbers and Ship's Biscuit, out of a very useful 1m 3yo debut winner who was from the family of Generous, Imagine, Triptych etc. This well-bred colt is trained by Sir Michael Stoute and proved too green to do himself justice in a pair of 1m maidens at Newmarket and Yarmouth last autumn, making a promising mid-race move before dropping back out of contention on debut and then finding himself short of room at a crucial stage when 11th of 14 next time (not knocked about on either occasion). He made his reappearance in a 10f maiden at Windsor in April, sent off an 8/1 chance; raced towards the rear of the field and was pushed along with around half a mile left to run, but he made good progress from the three furlong marker and kept on steadily throughout the final furlong despite obvious signs of greenness, eventually finishing fourth behind lesser-fancied stablemate Opinion (beaten 5¼ lengths). He unsurprisingly showed much improved form to make a winning debut in this sphere when landing a handicap over just short of 12f back at Windsor last month, sent off an 11/4 chance; made all and travelled best, last off the bridle but soon challenged once shaken up over a furlong out, perhaps even being headed entering the final furlong, responding gamely for pressure to get the better of Man Of Plenty by a head after a protracted dual. He has been raised 7lbs for that win, but the pair were nine lengths clear and this colt still didn't look the finished article, so that he was able to fend off another rival on what was pretty bad ground was to his immense credit and likely leaves him with scope for further improvement even off his revised mark. Smart half sister Hi Calypso won this back in 2007 off a 1lb lower mark, and this colt looks a similar sort open to any amount of improvement as he gains experience; been given plenty of time since that hard race last time, and his stable is in much better form than it was at the time of his two previous this term, so not hard to envisage this colt going very well here on much better ground.
The William Muir-trained Last Shadow is a well-bred son of Notnowcato who successfully built on a promising debut run to land a 10f maiden on rain-softened ground at Nottingham next time out, staying on strongly throughout the final furlong to overhaul Palus San Marco and score by 1¼ lengths. He followed up in a handicap over the same course and distance from an opening mark of 77 in similar fashion the following month; raced towards the rear of the field until making progress from over three furlongs out, taking a while to hit top stride but really getting his act together entering the final furlong, cutting back Spirit Of The Law with every stride to get up in the closing stages and win going away by 1½ lengths. He was unable to complete his hat trick in a decent 12f handicap at Haydock off a 5lbs higher mark a couple of weeks later, perhaps finding the quicker ground against him; raced a lot closer to the action on this occasion, shoved along with around half a mile left to run and essentially struggling from some way out, outpaced over three furlongs out and unable to make any sort of impression thereafter as he eventually beat just one home behind Montaser (beaten 14½ lengths). The faster ground quickly sunk his hat trick, clearly not the same horse that had been seen finishing off to good effect to land his maiden and then a handicap at Nottingham on rain-softened ground previously; drying ground unlikely to be of much help to him here, though it won't be anywhere near as quick as it was at Haydock, and it is a little early to be writing to this son of Notnowcato off.
The Andrew-Balding trained Cherry Street progressed with each outing at two last year, kicking off with a third place finish behind Gassin Golf in a 1m maiden at Kempton last August before finding only Daneking too good for him in a 10f maiden at Goodwood the following month, shaping as though a thorough stayer in the making. He got off the mark at the third time of asking when landing 10f maiden at Pontefract at the beginning of October, going off a 7/2 chance beforehand; tracked the leader until ridden to challenge from the two furlong marker, taking over soon after and staying on strongly inside the final furlong to come a commanding 3¼ length winner over Sir Graham Wade. His reappearance outing came in a 12f handicap at Kempton in April, for which he was sent off a very well fancied 5/2 chance; jumped awkwardly and proved keen under restraint in a modestly run affair, still last with two furlongs left to run but making gradual headway down the outer from over a furlong out to come home in third behind Theturnofthesun (beaten 1¼ lengths). He proved disappointing on his most recent start when contesting a 12f handicap at Chester last month, for which he was sent off a not completely unfancied 9/1 chance; raced in behind the leaders for the most part, ridden and unable to quicken over two furlongs out, quickly beaten and eventually beating just two home behind Rosslyn Castle (beaten 34 lengths). He stopped very quickly on that occasion as though something may have been amiss, albeit it was the slowest ground he has encountered to date; back on better ground and stable took this 12 months ago with Whiplash Willie, so it wouldn't be altogether surprising to see this son of Alhaarth bounce back from his disappointment last time.
The Richard Hannon-trained Rule Book is a son of Aussie Rules who shaped with some promise when finishing fifth behind Minimise Risk in an 11f maiden at Newbury's Greenham meeting in April, slowly away but soon recovering to race up with the action, ridden well over two furlongs out and unable to make any real impression from over a furlong from home, holding his position and nothing more. He built on that debut run when contesting a 12f maiden at Folkestone a month later, for which she was sent off a 4/1 chance; proved keen under restraint and was dropped back to race in the last trio until switched and ridden to take close order well over half a mile from home, one paced over two furlongs out but staying on again inside the final furlong to take second close home behind Glittering Gold. He went one better next time when landing a 10f maiden at Sandown 11 days ago, for which he went off a 9/2 chance; led narrowly at just a steady tempo for much of the way, ridden two furlongs out and headed entering the final furlong, battling back bravely to regain the lead inside the final furlong to see off Sir Quintin by a neck. He is improving steadily with racing, and showed a good attitude to wrestle back the lead last time having been headed entering the final furlong; step back up to this distance ought to suit and although a mark of 83 couldn't be classed as lenient, unwise to rule out further progress now moving into handicaps.
The Saeed Bin Suroor-trained Al Saham is a son of Authorized who made a winning start to his career in a 7f maiden at Newcastle last summer, but proved unable to follow up in a 1m Listed contest at Pontefract next when sent off market leader, finishing sixth of eight behind Letsgoroundagain. He showed very little on his return to action last month when beating just one home behind Expense Claim in what was a very well contested 10f handicap at Newbury; showed signs of life last time when chasing home useful prospect Willie Wag Tail in a 12f handicap at Kempton a fortnight ago, staying on well from a hold up position to get to within 2 lengths of the comfortable winner. He certainly improved for the step up in trip last time out, perhaps set a little bit too much to do albeit very much second best on the day; up 2lbs for that and has to give weight all round now, but he remains unexposed in this sphere and can get himself involved if building on his latest effort as expected.
The John Gosden-trained Ex Oriente had been highly regarded at two, prominent in the market on his first two starts but failing to live up to expectations, and ending his juvenile campaign in a visor and finishing a tailed off last in a 1m nursery at Yarmouth. However, he turned over a new leaf when winning a 10f maiden at Lingfield in January on his first run back since being gelded, and he has followed that victory with solid performances in handicaps since, finishing fourth behind Kingsdesire over 10f at Doncaster in a race that worked out nicely and last time finishing third behind Willie Wag Tail and Al Saham on his first attempt over 12f. He clearly isn't the most straightforward of individuals, once again looking as though he wasn't putting it all in when asked for his effort last time (headgear now dispensed with); solid and consistent enough sort inspite of his quirks, but likely to find one or two that bit too good for him here off a 1lb higher mark here.
This looks a decent enough maiden in which to the trio with previous experience hardly set an exacting standard on what they have achieved to date, leaving the path clear for one of the newcomers to make a winning start to their career, with one or two making particular appeal on pedigree in what could turn out to be an informative contest.
The selection is a son of Cape Cross who is a half brother to smart dual 7f 2yo winner (including the Group 2 Champagne Stakes) Saamidd out of a 10f 3yo winner who was a half sister to the smart 6f-1m French winner Mathematician, 1m 2yo AW debut winner Zimira and 7f 2yo winner Oracle out of a Listed-placed 12f 3yo winner who was a half sister to top-class miler Barathea, Fillies' Mile/Irish 1000 Guineas winner Gossamer, high-class miler Zabar, very smart triple 7f 2yo winner/1000 Guineas fourth Free At Last and to the dam of high-class 7f-1m winner Seta. This well-bred colt is trained by Roger Varian and makes obvious appeal on pedigree, coming from a hugely successful family that does particularly well at two, with this colt's half brother making an impressive winning debut before landing the Champagne Stakes, and the dam was a half sister to a debut winner on this surface and from the family of high/top-class milers Barathea, Gossamer and Zabar. He is very much bred to make a significant impact over this distance at two, and has reportedly caught the eye on the practice grounds these past few weeks; stable made a very quick start with its youngsters, sending out three winning debutantes already, and it wouldn't be a massive surprise if this colt were to follow suit and get off the mark at the first time of asking.
The John Gosden trained Mowhoob is a son of Medicean who is the second foal of a 7f 4yo fibresand winner who was a half sister high-class Italian 6-7f winner (including at Group 3/Listed level) Per Incanto and prolific smart Italian 5-6f winner Patapan out of a high-class Italian sprinter who was a half sister to multiple smart 7f winner (including at Group 3 level) Naahy and 5f 2yo debut winner Yellow Trumpet. This colt made his debut outing in a 6f novices' contest at Yarmouth towards the beginning of this month, for which he was sent off a not unfancied 9/2 chance; seemed to know his job well enough, breaking alertly and racing up with the pace until pushed along and losing his position over two furlongs out, rallying briefly approaching the final furlong but ultimately proving one pace as he came home in fifth behind Amazonas (beaten 4½ lengths). He didn't really shown any discernible signs of improvement when contesting a 7f maiden at Haydock nine days later, going off a not unfancied 6/1 chance; raced towards the rear of the field, still some way off the pace with over three furlongs left to run, pushed along to close on the main group and taking a while to get going, slightly hampered and switched left at the furlong marker, eventually coming home in fifth behind Glory Awaits (beaten 6¾ lengths). He has hinted at promise in both outings and nothing more, admittedly not in the best of positions last time when set quite a lot to do from off the pace, but he was hardly making ground up quickly when slightly impeded entering the final furlong; takes on some very interesting newcomers here on what is his third run within a month and though his stable are in red-hot form at present, no surprise to see at least one of the debutantes prove too good for him here.
There are several interesting newcomers aside from the selection, the first of them being the Mahmood Al Zarooni-trained Snowboarder, a son of Raven's Pass who is the first foal of an unraced half sister to top-class US 6-7f dirt winner (including at Grade 2/3 level) Munnings and US 5-6f winner Munnings Sister out of a half sister to very smart US duo Icon Project and Lasting Approval. This colt sold for $190,000 at auction and makes a fair amount of appeal on pedigree, being the first foal of a half sister to top-class dirt speedster Munnings who was the daughter of a half sister to US 10f Grade 1 winner Icon Project and very smart US performer (at around 1m) Lasting Approval. He comes from a stable that almost always had its youngsters fully fit and ready to do themselves justice, and after a slower than usual start their 2yos look ready to strike form in a big way after a 1-2 in a Newmarket (July) maiden last weekend; this colt certainly looks the part on paper, and not hard to envisage that he will play a significant role in the outcome of this, particularly if proving popular in the market beforehand.
The Richard Hannon-trained Tobacco Road is a son of Westerner who is the first foal of a once-raced maiden half sister to top-class German middle distance performer Lavirco, high-class 12-14f Flat (including at Group 3 level)/very smart 2m 2f-3m 1f hurdle (including at Grade 1 level)/2m 4f chase winner Laveron and a handful of other winners in Germany out of a daughter of top-class German juvenile La Dorada. This colt makes some appeal on pedigree as the first foal of a maiden half sister to very smart German middle distance pair Laveron and Lavirco, and his sale's price rose from 27,000gns as a foal to 38,000gns as a yearling. However, for all he hails from the top juvenile unit in the land, his pedigree is geared towards him staying a lot further later down the line, his sire very much a stamina influence on top of an already stamina-laden dam side of the pedigree. He has quite clearly shown speed somewhere along the line to debut this early and over this distance, and this looks a winnable enough race in which those with previous experience look nothing special; stable not banging in the winners of late like they usually do, and though any pre-race market support for this colt would still look very interesting, others make that bit more appeal on this occasion.
The David Simcock-trained Gabrial The Boss is a US-bred son of Street Boss who is a half brother to the smart 7f-1m winner (including at Listed level) Fong's Thong, 10f 3yo winner Mystery River and 5f 2yo debut winner Golden Anthem, out of an unraced sister to the very useful dual 7f winner Mandarina (placed at Listed level) and a half sister to dual 12f Listed winner Xtra and 12f 3yo winner La Bayadere. This colt sold for just 29,000gns as a yearling at auction, but he actually makes quite a bit of appeal on pedigree as a half brother to the smart 7f-1m winner Fong's Thong and also a debut winner at two, out of a full sister to a Listed-placed dual 7f winner and a half sister to smart middle distance performer Xtra. He ought to make a two-year-old at this distance and has been found a realistic enough opening, and his stable saddled its first winning 2yo winning newcomer earlier this month; booking of a Jamie Spencer a positive (6-29 on 2yos for this stable in recent seasons), and no surprise to see this well-related son of Street Boss prove up to making an impact on debut.
The Mark Johnston-trained Salutation is a son of Iffraaj who is a half brother to fairly useful 7-9f AW winner Totally Ours out of a 6f 2yo winner who was a half sister to Dewhurst winner/Irish 2000 Guineas third Tout Seul and 6f 2yo winner Soaring Eagle out of a maiden granddaughter of Yorkshire Oaks winner Condessa. This colt sold for 78,000gns as a foal at auction and makes some appeal on pedigree, his half sister to a reasonably useful performer who won three times on this surface, including over this trip, whilst the dam was a six furlong winning half sister to the very smart juvenile Tout Seul. He represents a team that sent out a well-supported newcomer to make a winning debut here last week, and there is enough in this colt's pedigree to suggest he should make a two-year-old; stable can have them fit and ready to strike at the first time of asking, and any pre-race market support for this son of Iffraaj would look most telling.
The Ed Dunlop-trained Gravitational is a son of Invincible Spirit who is the second foal of a 1m 2yo AW debut winner who was a half sister to 10f 3yo debut winner Imperial Pippin (placed at Listed level) and 10f 4yo AW winner Kentish out of a very smart dual UK/US winner (including at Grade 2 level) who was related to smart milers Capital Secret, River Flare, Set Alight, True Flare and War Zone. This colt has attracted plenty of interest on his three visits to the ring, selling for €70,000 as a foal, €76,000 as a yearling and 135,000gns a couple of months ago at the Craven Breeze-Ups, and he boasts a useful Juddmonte pedigree that includes a host of high-class milers whilst his dam was a winner on this surface on her debut. He comes from a stable that is already off the mark with its juveniles, and they can have the odd newcomer ready to strike at the first time of asking; fact he commanded three healthy amounts on his three visits to auction, coupled with the fact he makes plenty of appeal on pedigree and comes from a yard off the mark with its 2yos, this son of Invincible Spirit is afforded a good deal of respect ahead of his debut outing. _________________ Dark Horses 2013 - Flat
4.25 Sailsbury Mawaakef 8/1, Form over 1m is 1,2,2,2,6,3,3 with the majority on good/soft. Ran a cracker lto in the Investec Mile up at Epsom in a big field, keeping in touch throughout and was driven close to be beaten by Highland Knight by a neck, finishing ahead of the likes of Moone's My Name and Boogie Shoes. Her latest win came at Yarmouth over 7f where she produced a strong staying performance to make all and easily win 1f out. The booking of Ryan Moore shows good intentions by connections, who generally rides well at Sailsbury with a 22.4% win and 57.3% place rate and he has switched from the current favourite. Her form in class 2 this year is 3,2 and i feel she can go 1 better with some rain forecast which will suit. Trade Commissioner looks to be the main threat, but he wont enjoy the soft ground and looks to prefer a longer a trip.
6.40 Bath Imagery 200/1 E/W, Big price, yet to place in 2 starts, but Trainer and Jockey have a decent strike rate with 9 wins from 42 21% win rate, giving a ROI 178%. Along with a trainer place rate for this season of 28.4%. A very slim chance at gaining a place, a very very small nibble may be on the cards.

does anyone else think tony newcombe has plotted up leviathan for a repeat win in the 425 salisbury.won this race last year on only visit to track on soft going now 5lb lower.all his best form seems to be on soft goingand cheek

405 Carlisle Eltheeb 0.5pt win 0.5pt place 4 places. Tough race and will take some winning. We have decent enough form to be involved as 3 runs back off of a mark of 80 at thirsk we got up for 3rd after a Lay off and in behind that day was Mazen who went on to win a 0-70 hcp and place in a 0-85 and a 0-95. The 2nd that day has also gone on to win a 0-100 hcp nto. Today we run off 83 in theory a better race but im not so sure ? and carry the same weight. Price is shortening up by looks of it. Never a good thing for one of mine Trainer and jockey are in good form. Trainer is going well and they do well at this track. Track suits cd horses which we are not but what with the trainers record here and the fact we have won at hamilton bodes well for here. I got 11/1 and 8s is looking skinny enough in truth in this race where there are plenty of dangers _________________ Watching those snakes !!!!!!!!

i have been making some decent returns on horses that are running on the flat but have been running over the jumps i.e. hilalli 28/1 last night night theres 3 interesting runners today ravi river 3.00 carlisle and two in the 8.50 kempton cotillion and wayward glance ? all very good odds anyone have any good info on these 3?
Prefers this kind of ground as last time out did come 3rd but with only 7 horses in the field but was on the softer side of ground where all best runs have come from good to firm and 2 runs back came 4th at sandaown on good to firm which it is agin today. Same jockey as 2 runs back when 4th of 13th and still trying to get 3rd last furlong and Dane O'Neill rides this often too. Not ran in a class 2 race be for but 2 runs back when 4th at sandown was a class 3 race and again back in March coming a good 8th of 22. Was high in the weights last time out of 9-5 and today back down to 9-1 so weight not a problem. EW at 14/1 _________________ I stake low on bets.
If i had a double headed coin I would still loose and if i had a lucky rabbits foot it would bring as much luck as it did the rabbit.

4:55pm Salisbury - LAST SHADOW
Not given a hard ride at all on debut in March, held up at the rear and never dangerous but he stayed on well with plenty of now decent handicappers in front and behind him. Was closer to the pace on his next start and picked up the leaders inside the final furlong staying on well to win over 10 furlongs at Nottingham. Stayed at over that course and distance next time out, when winning well finishing very strongly despite racing wide in the rear. That was off a mark of 77, and was only raised 5lbs for that win for his race last time out. Stepped up to 12 furlongs and on quicker ground he couldn't pick up 4f out and only beat one home. Notnowcato's progeny have at 8.77% SR on Good or better ground, yet a 26.66% SR on good-to-soft or softer ground, so he looks bred for softer conditions and the faster ground won't have helped. A few prominent horses in this will help set a strong pace and I think this will play to the horse's stamina in these conditions.
A strong traveller who had been racing over 7 furlongs and further this year but was unable to finish his races well enough to get his head in front. Was dropped down to 6 furlongs at Brighton in May and was unfortunate to bump in to a nice sort (next time out finished neck second in a handicap off 80) but the pair came well clear of the field. Stayed at 6 furlongs next time out and finally lost his maiden tag. Made hard work of it thought when rearing the start and chasing the field immediately but stayed on strongly in the final stages. Tried in a handicap last time out over 5 furlongs and acquitted himself well enough to suggest this step back up to 6 furlongs is right. 2.00 Al Khisa E/W
This Kevin Ryan, horse was terrible on gdfm ground last time but prior too that it ran on the softer ground and it was not a bad effort even though it finished 6th, it went left at start and was always out the back of the field after that before before staying on one pace and dont forget it was it's first run and will have needed that and I am going too take a chance it will prefer that sft ground it got on it's debut better than the gdfm it ran on last time and if that is the case then could improve alot and hopefully grab a place or better at big price for a yard that often have nice price winners.
3.00 Cool Marble
I know it's latest form is pretty bad but it's form win France was pretty good and I think that French form looks better than what is in this race and I guess that is why Cool Marble, has quite abit of weight too carry but I think is capable of winning still if showing it's French form and I will take a chance with it today.
3.20 Elvin E/W
There are alot of newcomers here and I am gona take a E/W chance with Elvin, the Amanda perrett, runner by Rock Of Gibraltar, so should go fine if on gd or gdsft and in a very tricky race I am going to have a go with it E/W
3.50 Bunraku
I likes Bunraku's, 1st run behinds some horses what look pretty good and Bunraku, was held up and staying on that day then on it's second run the ground looked way too soft and I will completely forget about that race and think has a very strong chance of winning today going of that 1st run.
4.25 Levithian, has already been meantioned on the forum wich made me look at it and I think has a great chance it won the race last year and is on a very handy mark lower than last year and has a top jockey Queally, on board wich is a very good mix it looks like been laid out for this and is sure to go well, the biggest danger could be last years second Vainglory.
4.55 Last Shadow, I hope their is atleast a little bit of juice in the ground for this horse or could be game over before the off, if the ground is too fast then Last Shadow will hate it but this horse does look a very nice type, I was impressed when it won a class 3 handicap beating spirit of the law and staying on readily but that was on soft ground and that is my big worry it might need softer ground but the extra 2 furlong today should help if does get outpaced and hopefully can run a big race though Rye House, could be tough to beat if improves again but at the prices I will take a chance with Last Shadow.
5.25 Pindrop E/W
It does not seem too like the all weather or the soft ground, so maybe 6f on good ground maybe more too it's liking and C Cox, has had a couple winners lately 1 them was at Ascot, with Fahy a jockey I like on board and he rides today and with the yard going ok and this better ground Pindrop might improve today on the good ground and run a nice race at a nice price E/W

Bath 19:40 - RED SENOR @ 8/1
This horse does appear at first glance to not have much of a chance of being better than its mark due to a series of unimpressive midfield finishes since it went up 7lbs for a facile win at Lingfield a few runs ago. However, there is more here than meets the eye; he met trouble in running trying to stay on from the rear at Nottingham in April, and then has appeared twice at my local course Windsor, meeting more trouble in running in May and then coming with what appeared to be a dangerous run earlier this month before flattening out.
The ground was absolutely terrible on that last appearance though (there were 2 NR's in his race, but many of the other races that night had 5 or 6) and either he didn't handle it properly, which is a possibility, or (more likely I think) it just drained the stamina of a colt which is all about speed. How appropriate then that connections should send him to Bath? Which, I think, is the only course in the South that I have seen Firm going in the last couple of years. It drains very well and the likelihood is that with a drying day forecast and the ground not too bad anyway to start with, it will be on the quick side of good by racing and he should get much more suitable conditions.
He is well weighted with a couple of these rivals on previous meetings (although Wicked Wench is a NR now) and, given the conditions, I think he might be ready to continue the progress that he started back in March. The principal danger to me seems to be Jwala if she is fit as her last run, when winning by clear lengths, has worked out well. However given the possible fitness concern I'm happy to side with Red Senor.

2.30 Secret Destination, Daughter of Dubai Destination, ran close on her last 2 occasions ahead of better, more experienced horses that run today.
2.40 Bhathair, Easy winner lto over the fences at aintree, is a good, clean jumper and is yet to place lower than 3rd at 2m over 12 months.
3.50 Riot Of Colour, Placed 2nd in all of her 4 runs only to be beaten by better horses to which are on show today, a drop down in class she should have more than enough to win here.
4.35 No Poppy, Loves the ground, went close lto off the same rating to be beaten by a short head at Thirsk. Has form over this distance this year with 2,1,1 all in this class and 2 of the runs were good to soft ground.
6.50 Steady Gaze win and Inside Knowledge E/W

8.50 Borug, simply look's the class horse here and was 3rd in the Oaks staying on and this trip tonight looks the rite trip for the horse I believe and has the ideal draw and the class to win this even if is a short price, I was more than happy to take 11/4
9.20 Eurystheus, should improve on his second start this year and has a nice draw and Richard Hughes on board for the inform Hannon, yard everything looks set for a big run

Trainer and jockey are in good form. Trainer is going well and they do well at this track. Track suits cd horses which we are not but what with the trainers record here and the fact we have won at hamilton bodes well for here. I got 11/1 and 8s is looking skinny enough in truth in this race where there are plenty of dangers
