I am looking to shorten my write ups for this new Boxing season, I have spent a lot of time on them in the past and although I've loved doing them, I just think they are very time consuming. The research will still be done, but I will be a little less detailed in what I say.
Sky Sports Boxing returns on Saturday with a big Frank Maloney bill in Doncaster. There are some good prospects on the undercard, but the fight that headlines sees Donny's own European champion Jamie McDonnell defending his bantamweight crown against Belgium's Stephane Jamoye./b]
[b]Jamie McDonnell - Keys to the fight
15-2 (7 KO's), boxed 104 pro rounds and has a 38.89 KO%. Boxrec's #21 in the world but interestingly only #2 in Britain behind British champ Stuey Hall.
One of the most improved fighters of 2010, coming out of nowhere really to win British, Commonwealth and European titles.
Had personal problems early on in his career and got beat in consecutive fights by decent British operators Chris Edwards and Lee Haskins super flyweight.
Beat Ian Napa on a controversial split decision exactly a year ago to this fight date to win British and Commonwealth titles, before following it up with a very impressive 10th round stoppage of Frenchman Jerome Arnoud on his own patch to win the European.
Faced weak Italian Rodrigo Bracco in first defence back in July, winning in three rounds, but despite stopping his last two opponents, he's more of boxer than a puncher. Works incredibly hard, 12 rounds will be no problem, but Napa had good success against him and he's a guy who you cant see going on to world level.
Stephane Jamoye – Keys to the fight
19-1 (9 KO's), boxed 116 pro rounds and has a 45 KO%. Ranked #34 in the world with boxrec.com.
First thing to note is this guy is very similar to Ian Napa, in that he's 5f2 and a lot smaller than McDonnell who's a big bantamweight. This kid on paper hits harder than Napa though and if this goes to points, it will help him in the rounds, despite being the away favourite.
Won the European Union title in his last fight, stopping an inexperienced, albeit unbeaten fighter on his home patch in Spain in the 11th round.
Only loss has come against 17-0 WBC top 15 ranked Japanese fighter Tomoki Kameda in Mexico, losing a split and very close fight over 10 rounds.
Fought in a better class than his opponent McDonnell and with his last two fights being away, he will have no problems going to Doncaster for this fight.
What do I think is going to happen?
Cracking little matchup on paper, both guys are good boxers and because both have been successful on their travels in the last year, you can bet that these two wont be fearful of this fight. Home advantage is going to help McDonnell, but I think he's in for a very tough night's work. Jamoye looks like a quality fighter and on paper looks well capable of stepping up to European class. He will have seen Napa have a lot of success against McDonnell on pre fight tape and it will give him some confidence, despite his opponent being quite a bit taller. Therefore I give the Belgian a cracking chance here and 5/2 with Bet365 looks like a great price, there has been money for him on Friday as well. The fight looks sure to go the distance and +10.5 rounds is 4/11 with SkyBet, while Jamoye is a huge 7/1 with SportingBet to win on points.
Over the English channel Norwich fighter Danny McIntosh has a European title fight himself as he fights Thierry Karl for the light heavyweight belt vacated by Nathan Cleverly.
Thierry Karl – Keys to the fight
28-4 (18 KO's), boxed 144 pro rounds and has a KO% of 56.25. Ranked #15 in the world by boxrec.com.
Loads of experience, but has barely fought outside of France and has been nothing more than a domestic champion.
One bit of interesting form on his record is the first round stoppage of Nadjibi Mohamed, who took Nathan Cleverly 12 rounds last month, and this in the French Prizefighter which he went on to win.
Not got many world names on his record, but he's shown some good form in France and has won his last eight fights.
Danny McIntosh – Keys to the fight
12-1 (6 KO's), boxed 60 pro rouunds and has a KO% of 46.15. Ranked #19 in the world by boxrec.com and has just Cleverly and Bellew ahead of him in Britain.
Cocky and charismatic character who's only been beaten by Nathan Cleverly, where he was totally outclassed and got stopped in the 7th round, after being put down several times.
Looked very impressive in beating Tony Oakey in two rounds last February to win the English title, Oakey had won the Prizefighter before that fight and McIntosh showed that explosive power he's got.
Dangerous puncher, but has this fight come too soon for him as he takes on a guy who's boxed more than double the pro rounds than he has?
What do I think is going to happen?
Another good matchup and I do see it as a little bit of a pick'em as I dont know how good either is to be honest. Karl is experienced in the pro game and can definitely punch, but he's fought a lot of weak domestic opposition in recent years. McIntosh is very explosive and if he's trained right for this, he's got a chance. He's jumped a few levels to get here and I would have liked him to have a few more fights before going for this, but the opportunity has come up and he'll be up for it. Hard to call a winner really, two very dangerous guys and I'm a fan of McIntosh, so I wouldnt mind having a punt on him, but it's in France and it's hard to know if he's ready. I can see this fight being over and done with in the first nine rounds though and that's why I say back under 9.5 rounds @ 4/5 with Boylesports.
Not even going to bother with Holyfield fight as I think it's wrong he's still boxing, that fight is on Premier Sports at around 3am UK time. Lost a good German bill earlier on this week as well, with Sebastian Sylvester and Steve Cunningham defending world titles, but Sylvester picked up an injury and the whole bill is off. _________________ Football and Boxing expert.
Lawton v Matthews
Matthews looked the better fighter in Prizefighter, I thought the way he beat McArthur and Choi was impressive, I can give him a pass for the loss to Buckland as he came into the fight off the back of a really hard fight and was at a massive disadvantage to Buckland who had progressed with a first round KO. Conversley Lawton looked poor and I thought Sykes might have taken him out. TBH It's no secret that neither guy has a great chin, Lawton has lost 7 fights, 4 by T/KO and Matthews 5 losses have all been by way of T/KO. Lawton has actualy never gone 12 rounds in 35 professional bouts, Matthews has gone the full distance just twice in 30 fights.
This is supposed to be Lawtons last outing and he's admitted he's had an injury thats affected his training, where as Matthews is supposed to be in good shape (said he was only 50% last time they met) and will be a hoping a win will lead to bigger things.
Lawton has stopped Matthews before in a close fight so the 1/2 on Matthews looks a bit skinny despite the fact I think we'll see a reversal of fortunes here. I think Matthews will be in better shape and have the motivation to avenge his earlier loss so I'm going to play Matthews by KO/TKO/DQ at 15/8 as well as under 9.5 rounds at Evens as history tells us fights involving these guys don't often go 12 rounds.
McIntosh v Karl
I think this is a 50/50 fight, I can only assume Karl is favorite because the fight is in France. However I don't see this fight going the distance so I'm not sure thats such a big advantage. Karl has looked better since his move to 175, he has decent power evidenced by a first round KO win over Cleverlys last opponent. McIntosh also has decent power having won 6 out of his last 7 fights inside the distance, losing the other one by 7th round TKO to Cleverly (survived 2 knockdowns in the 2nd IIRC).
The fact both guys hit relatively hard and aren't great defensively, added to the fact McIntosh will know he has to press the fight and go for the stoppage makes it hard to envisage this fight going over 9.5 rounds. Therefore I will take the under 9.5 rounds as well at 4/5. As I've said I think this a 50/50 fight, therefore McIntosh at 17/10 outright is value, however whilst thats a good price I've already said I don't think this fight goes the distance (even if it did you'd have to think Karl would get the decision) so I'd rather take 9/4 on McIntosh by KO/TKO/DQ.
I agree Jamoye has a good chance to spring the upset, though I won't be having a bet on this one. Wouldn't rule out this one ending inside the distance either...
good fight was mcdonnell v jamoye, disappointed the belgian didnt win and it was a somewhat home decision, but you expect that.
like we all said though danny mcintosh is the new european light heavyweight champion, stopping the frenchman in the 11th round. he showed that power he's got and has now stepped up a few levels, he's a real player now. _________________ Football and Boxing expert.
Don't agree with you there Welshie, it was close but Mcdonnell just had the edge.
As for Mcinosh thought the bet was toast up untill the 10th, one shot turned it all the way around, it's never over till it's over.
Great start to the new season
Karl v McIntosh was painful viewing most of the time but I won't complain at the ending. Not sure in what context you mean McIntosh is a player mate, he won't go any further imo, Bellew beats him and I don't rate him either.
I think McDonnell won, the scorecards were fair imo, the one complaint you could have was the fact he kept pushing Jamoye away with his shoulder, he should of lost a point earlier than he did, especially as the ref kept warning him, if the fight was in Belgium and he'd done that and been warned so many times he would of lost more than just the one...
Really fancied Matthews for the stoppage but he won a decision, knocked Lawton down in the 6th but couldn't follow it up so a small loss overall
any guy with the European belt is a player lad, it gives you a good ranking with all the organizations and I dont think it's a great division at European level to be honest, so he's got a few defences in him. _________________ Football and Boxing expert.
agree to disagree then mate, the guys ranked 1-5 in the EU rankings all beat him, as does Bellew whose 7th and his natural next opponent imo. Obviously it helps world ranking wise, recent haveyweight fights being good examples, but he just isn't near that level, Karl was beating him handily albeit it a poor fight
I watched the McDonnell V Jamoy fight and it was a cracker, I thought it was a fair decision for McDonnell, however I dont think he will do much more, he is far too clumsy and will be picked off easily maybe by a wee mexican.
