I think "very young" is an overstatement mate. He turns 27 in 2 weeks time.

In my personal opinion Rooney was a great young player who has never fullfilled world beater potential. Sadly he is just a slightly above average striker at best. Yes i know he scores for Utd pretty regularly but with the top sides i often i feel any type of footballer would grab their fair share.

Why he commands so much respect from pundits and fans alike has been beyond me for ages.

lol, roll on the 3rd game of euros where we'll have Rooney back who will single handedly win everything for us.....yeah nice one.

Same over hyped shite.

Don't knock Rooney !

If he hadn't scored in the group we may have been playing Spain tonight.

Give Spain 30 odd attempts on goal and would it have needed extra time and penalties to settle it Confused

Nah , the papers would have required more column inches to fit all the scorers in , maybe even 3 match balls for the hat trick heroes too ! Cheeky

Did any player have a good game, IMO, our best player by a mile was John Terry, none of them deserve to be in the first squad for the world cup.

I know, rather than bring on Oxlade Chamberlain late on to trouble the italians with his pace, let's just see the game out with 10 men by bringing on Jordan Henderson (WHO?).

Just watched an interview with Martin Tyler, who is the best commentator in the game and he has just said England can go home with their heads held high, why?

We were completely outplayed against France, fortunate against Sweden and outplayed and lucky against Ukraine.

We then get totally outplayed against a poor italian team who looked like world beaters when they played us.

The squad should leave with their heads lowered after those performances.

England v France
Shots at goal - France 17 England 3
Possession - France 65% - England 35%

England v Sweden
Shots at goal - Sweden 12 England 15
Possession - Sweden 50% - England 50%

England v Ukraine
Shots at goal - Ukraine 16 England 9
Possession - Ukraine 57% - England 43%

England v Italy
Shots at goal - England 8 Italy 31, yes , that's correct 31
Possession - Italy 68% - England 32%

If this is what is called as going with your head held high then a lot of people need to give their head a good shake

Your right, we probably wouldn't have needed extra time and pens but in hindsight that was just prolonging the inevitable anyway.

Thats 30 mins + pens of my life i am never getting back!!

We need to stop looking for a scapegoat, England simply don't have enough quality to compete at the highest level. Italy deserved to go through tonight, I think everyone can admit to that. I'm as gutted as the next Englishman but we have fallen short once again, just.

We were awful from half time onwards. Simply awful. How we didn't lose in normal time I will never know. Carroll was totally out of his depth, where in the first half we were playing one touch football and neat triangles that totally changed when he touched it.

I know that many people won't see it, but we were in control for the majority of the first half and that is the positive that I am going to take. I don't think Young was as bad as everyone is making out today, and I think Roy will be kicking himself that he didn't put The Ox on for Rooney and put Young up front with Welbeck.

Rooney just wasn't the player he can be, and Roys faith in him was unfounded. But on the subject of subs, how completely anonymous was Walcott? Basically we had an equal share of the game until the substitutions, but the overwhelming memory will be just how bad we were after them.

Confused

Well giving the ball away nearly everytime he had it is a good indication he didn't have a good game. He was simply awful. Decision making was dreadful to watch. You could guess what was going to happen when he was on the ball.

Only Glen Johnson and Joe Hart can hold their heads high after that match. Can't include our Centre Backs as they were constantly fouled by the ball over the top to Ballotelli. Johnson gave the best defensive performance he has shown yet. And many stated they wouldn;'t have taken him at right back. That's why Italy constantly came out us on the Right, because Young was hopeless and Cole didn't do much better. Johnson and Milner had a much better control of things on the other flank in defence. No coincidence Italy constantly attacked on Young & Coles flank. Had the beating of them every time.

Young did dissapoint if I'm honest, after hearing from others how important he is for England after his contribution in pre-tournament friendlies (lets be honest, anyone given that free role behind the striker could have made an impact against Belgium and Norway.) We were let down big time by all attacking players, the defence (including Gerrard and Parker) can hold their heads high as far as I'm concerned, we lacked an attacking dimension for sure.

Have to agree with that Yes

We were woeful to be honest and going out to Italy sits better with me than going out to Germany which is what would have happened if we had gone through.

As others have said why did they look dead on their feet after 45 mins Shocked

Not going to criticise any player in particular as there were quite a few that didn't perform to their best ability.

Can't wait for the World Cup qualification to get underway now, more drama and ultimately heartache for us hardened long suffering England fans ... bring it on Very Happy

Sorry, but didn't have time to post this interesting statistic before the England-Italy game last night...:

England have lost five of their last six penalty shootouts.
