Bolt is surely nailed on for overseas sports personality of the year now. Available at 2.78 on Betfair at the minute, but will surely become favourite by the time (around christmas). He's restored many people's faith in the once tarnished sprinting events in considerable style. The others in the running are:
- Current favourite Phelps (available @ evens in what could be a great dutch bet), but I think the personality bit may let him down and the fact that swimming doesn't have the same appeal as sprinting
- Nadal, but Federer has won this 3 of the last 4 times so I think that will count against him
- Harrington, but golfers have only won 8 times since the award started 50 odd years ago. |

Been doing quite well on the Olympics recently but now Im tipping stuff on here Im sure its all going to go horribly wrong !
Anyway today I like
1. Womens 200m
Veronica Cambell Brown - as looked very comfortable in qualifying and main rival Alison Felix not looking so smooth. Odds are about 2.06 but Id say 70% chance so decent value
2. Mens 110m Hurdles
Lay Dayron Robles
Firstly the 110m hurdles is a very technical event and a small mistake could easily change things so how anyone can be 1.16 for this event is behind me. OK Robles is definitely the best of the competitors on average but hes not got 90% chance of winning
Also looking at the TV the track is wet so if you throw in that variable then it becomes even more of a ridiculous price
In terms of backing against, there look like 3 main alternatives
David Oliver 10
David Payne 40
Ladji Doucoure 44
Of these I think Payne is best value having better times in the last 12 months. Second to Robes in Semis but a faster time than the other two so if Robles doesnt get it right he is the mostly likley one for me and the price is nice!

Ant - I like your 110m hurdles Lay @1.16 - seems sensible after seeing Fav Lolo Jones mess up so badly in the womens event.
Shark - not exactly quoting best prices in the village there. BF go 1.71 to win and you can Lay no world record @1.03, which equates to 33/1 for a world record.
Amazing to see Team GB in 3rd place in the medals table . I doubt many of us saw that coming. |

Track is really wet
I know they wear spikes but surely its got to be a factor even if just psychologically making the runners feel less stable on their feet for a sprint hurdle race |

| Also think Lashawn Merritt is decent value at 5 versus Wariner at 1.28 in 400m. Not that much between them |

Can't believe both American relay teams dropped their baton, their coach isn't going to be keeping his job for long!
As well as that Britain get disqualified, only competition for the Jamaican men is Trinidad and Tobago unless they drop their baton.
This relay lark should really be a great one for laying favourites or obvious qualfiers. I'm sure the American's must have been priced pretty low to qualify in both of those. |

Great tip on Merrit ant.
I've only just noticed he'd won having checked my Betfair results for the day! put a couple of quid with an inplay trade out on your tip |

After all the huffing & puffing from the Aussies about our dominance in the medals table Steve Hooker finally becomes the 1st Australian male to win and Olympic Gold in a track & field event for 40 years when he clinched the mens pole vault.
Yes I did say 40 years!!!!
Nice of you to turn up our Antipodean brothers |

Today I have a few speculatives and one good thing (I hope!)
Womens 4x400 - USA @ 4/5
Won their heat in a fast time easing down and no real batton issues to worry about in this event!
Mens 800m - Alfred Kirwa @ 7/4
Kirwa and Bungei both looked good in their separate Semis but it just looked like Kirwa had more in hand. Not overly confident but I do think its between these two and the odds of 7/4 while smaller than the 5/2 of Bungei do seem pretty good value to me
Mens 5000 - Kipchoge EW @ 6/1
Bekele an obvious favourite but I have a few doubts with him having already run (and won) the 10k. Both Lagat and Kipchoge have to form to win this if Bekele is at all fatigued and with a rumoured fast early pace being planned this would play into the hands of Kipchoge who at 6/1 can be backed EW (although as Im sure you know Olympics EW while 1/3 odds is only 2 places)
Womens 1500m - Nancy Lagat EW @ 25/1
Longshot but based on performance at the games so far looks to have a much better chance than odds suggest, and a bit like Sherika Williams did in the 400m, think could get a place at a big price
The 4-fold pays 900-1 |
