A weekend in which across the English leagues there were some surprises but it was again late goals that scuppered some decent returns. The biggest shock of the weekend was Celtic going down to a surprise defeat at the hands of St. Johnstone in front of the Parkhead faithful, giving us our highest priced winner so far. Elsewhere in Europe the favoured sides had it pretty much their own way although Le Championnat continued its reliable trend of favoured sides unable to live up to their billing.

Another round of matches in the respective leagues around the continent, with a faltering Arsenal possibly being the biggest name looking to add a few points to our LSP as they head to Old Trafford on Sunday. In Scotland, Celtic will be looking to bounce back after a terrible week and keep pace with their Old Firm rivals. There are plenty of matches across mainland Europe that meet our needs also as we welcome the Spanish La Liga into the fold after the players union resolved their differences with the Spanish FA however it is now the Italian players turn to strike and thus the Serie A season will not get going until September 10th.

The two draws by Yeovil and Sheffield Wednesday were the only bright spots in an otherwise disappointing day in League 1. Over in League 2 it was exactly the same story with only Bradford and Northampton proving the bookies wrong by grabbing a point a piece in their respective away days at the seaside in matches at Morecambe and Southend.

Now that the Spanish and Italian players have sorted their disagreements with their respective F.A’s we have for the first time this season all the leagues up and running. With all the leagues playing that means there are plenty of choices but lets hope the underdogs can get the upper hand once again as results have started to favour the fancied sides as they settle into their groove and find some form.

The Italian season got under way and the fancied sides found things weren't all going their own way with Roma losing at the Stadio Olympico and AC sharing the points with Lazio in one of four opening day draws to give a healthy LSP return. Elsewhere, the English leagues were a disaster for the underdogs and it was pretty much the same across Europe with only the Dutch Eredivisie producing a few favourable results to reduce some of the losses from previous weeks.

A successful night from the English Leagues 1 and 2 with Colchester holding Brentford and Cheltenham doing the same to Torquay at Plainmoor over in League 2. The biggest surprise of the night was reserved for Crawley who came unstuck in front of their own fans with a 0-3 loss against Paulo Di Canio's Swindon leaving the blog with a 3.8pt profit for the evening.

Another round of matches to get our teeth into with plenty of choice in all the leagues, except in the English League 1 and 2 where the bookies seem to be erring on the side of caution in what can be two unpredictable divisions. Chelsea head the list as the most high-profile underdog for their trip to in-form United in a weekend that sees most of the Premiership meeting our criteria. Across Europe the usual suspects crop up on the list of fixtures but maybe we can hope for a bit of a Champions/Europa League hangover from them to give us a profit that has been lacking of late.

A series of upsets across the board this week. In England it was the Premiership’s underdogs turn to bite back as Blackburn, Norwich and QPR secured valuable wins with Newcastle and Fulham grabbing draws to give a healthy 6.2 LSP. However, it could not be repeated in the divisions below as the underdogs, bar Derby, failed to put up almost any resistance to the more fancied sides. In Scotland the win for St. Johnstone over Motherwell wasn’t enough to record a profit overall as the big odds are reserved for teams facing the Old firm duo. Across into Europe and there were some major upsets starting with the Bundesliga and Cologne who handed out a 4-1 thumping of midweek Champions League participants Leverkusen and they were followed by Hannover beating Dortmund to bring back a large chunk of the previous weekend’s losses. The French league continues to be a consistent provider of upsets and 3 draws pushed the league back into the black to the tune of 4 pts. However, it was left to Spain to provide the biggest priced winner of the weekend with Real Madrid’s loss at 12/1 outsiders Levante and Vallecano’s win at Getafe boosting the LSP overall by 7 pts to put the league in profit although I’m not expecting it to last ! Finally, in Italy and the profitable start continued with wins for Lecce and Genoa and a battling draw for Roma against Inter showing that the profit of the first week may not have been a fluke.
