Hi all
The Champions Tour heads to the TPC Tampa Bay in err Tampa Bay for the Encompass Insurance Pro-am, which was formerly the Outback Steakhouse Pro-am and won last year by John Cook beating Jay Don Blake in a playoff.
First thoughts are those two from the playoff last year John Cook & Jay Don Blake. It was Blake's first year here and so has taken a liking to the course, his worse round was a 70. Started this year well with a second in Hawaii but struggled since & not broken 70 in his last 7 rounds on tour. Cook has been here a few times before and was also 4th on debut in 08, 8th in 09 and a disappointing 61st in 2010. Like Blake started the season well with a 3rd & 5th in the first two events, but faded a little with 21st & 2 12th places in the events since.
With 4 top 10's here in 5 attempts Nick Price does like it here, was 17th in his debut year in 2007. Only 3 rounds over par in 14 here, 2 in 07 & 1 in 08. Won here in 2009 as well. Form this your though isn't great with just a 7th in the 2nd event & 43rd in his last event.
Making their debuts here last year were Michael Allen & Mark Calcavecchia and they were 5th & 9th respectively. Allen has not won since his Major win at the Senior PGA on his debut on this Tour, gone close 3 times this season though with two 3rd place finishes in the first 2 events & 2nd in the last event, 16th & 22nd in the other 2 events, and currently second on the money list. Also finished 9th at the Mayakoba Classic on the main tour. Calc was only 26th in the last event but was 2nd the vent before that & opened the season with two 7th placed finishes so again in good form this year.
The kid on this tour is Kirk Triplett who turned 50 at the end of March. Not done a lot on his 2 starts on the main tour, a missed cut & 73rd, but was 4th at the Nationwide Tour event he played in.
Having looked at his current form though I don't think I can look past Michael Allen.
Cheers

Well done Jimmy with your M.Allen tip, great stuff.
By the way because you mentioned Lipsky in the Malaysian and I had noticed him up there in recent weeks I had a few quid e/w on him- so thanks.
Not a big enough return to stop working but better than a kick up the backside!!
Cheers and good tipping again,
Dave |
