Hi all

The Champions Tour heads to Newport Beach, California for the Toshiba Classic. Won last year by Nick Price and Fred Couples in 2010, other past winners here this week, Langer 08, Haas 07, Bryant 06 & Purtzer 04.

First thought is the 2010 champ Fred Couples who followed his win with 5th here last year. His worst round around here in 6 attempts is a 67, and averages under 66 shots per round. Was 11th in the season opener in Hawaii and in a quiet season so far missed the cut at the Northern Trust on the main tour.

3rd last year was Michael Allen who opened with a 69, but came back with 64 & 66 to finish 3 behind price whom he had given a 9 shot lead in the first round. Last year is his only visit here. Has started the season solidly with 2 3rd place finishes in the opening 2 events, 16th in the last event and was also 9th at the Mayakoba on the main tour. Missed the cut two weeks ago at the Honda Classic.

With 6 rounds from 6 under 70 here is Corey Pavin who has won already this season at the Allianz. 18th in the opener & 50th last time out though aren’t quite as good. Last year here he was 12th & 7th in 2010.

Final thought is a player who had a poor 2011 due to injury and that’s the 2008 winner Bernhard Langer. A 2nd & 3rd already this season hints at a full recovery, with 15th in the opening event as well. Followed his win here with 9th, 17th & only 28th last year.

I think I will go with Michael Allen. Prepared to discount his missed cut at the Honda as the field there was strong, but in lesser fields & on this tour he has done well. If he can avoid a 69 this week then has a good chance of shooting low enough.

Cheers & good luck anyone else having a go

Jimmy
