It's Brian Ellison's 60th birthday today and I'm hoping the party carries on at Newcastle, where he has 6 runners, after a couple of short-priced bankers at Carlisle yesterday. Apparently, Ellison always targets this fixture and entertains family and friends, so a winner or two would cap the birthday celebrations.

According to a piece in the Weekender, Ellison said of Titus Titan(2.00): "He will win races and must go close on debut because he'll receive weight from penalised opponents and these races often cut up. This half brother to Astrology is my best two-year old; my wife Clare loves him more than she loves me!"

Memory Cloth is strongly fancied in the 3.00 back at a mile after failing to stay 10f at Chester last time out. He loves testing ground and is built to defy his big weight.

Ellison is also hoping that the horse named after his late father, John Forbes can win the 3.30 for the second year running. He said:" John Forbes has always been a tough battler and races off the same mark (66) as last year. This has been the plan for a long time."

He also runs two in the 4.30 and one in the 5.00 but I believe it's his first three of the day he expects to go closest.

Good luck however you play them, if at all!

Hi all. Back from a break, hopefully you've been doing well and enjoyed Ascot; to be honest all I caught was Frankell via that blooming BBC News Chanel you always get abroad (yawn).... but I did notice that Caledonia Lady ran a very creditable 5l behind the winner of its race at 33/1, and aged only 3 the horse could have a decent future. I also noticed that my friend Tevez was beaten again at pretty short odds.... I still think the till will go ping for this at some stage, it's getting some really unlucky rides!! Nice info above about Brian Ellison - I think they're worth looking at, although he does have a poor record with debutants in general and think the top two will be very hard for it to beat today; I like Jubilee Games in this race, since Fahey performs very well statistically in Novice races in general, and has a great record with them at Newcastle.

Good luck all.

Good to have you back merlin - we've been suffering without you! Less than 15 pages of discussion on some days recently - welcome home!

I quite like Suits Me in the mile handicap at Newcastle. Barron is in good form at the minute. Mostly being campaigned on the a/w the last couple of years but he has seen his turf mark come down a few lbs despite some decent efforts. Was just over 4 lengths behind Gatewood at York recently giving away 9lbs to him. Gatewood has being an impressive twice since and looks a Group horse. That was over 10f and it was only in the last furlong he tired. Has being tried over 10f of late and as a front runner on testing ground if he gets a soft lead he may be hard to peg back. Has won on soft/heavy ground before and has won on his only appearance here over C+D.

Yes Oscar, is a good number of years since he raced here but he has good form on softer and heavy conditions. He will need to wind the clock back a few years but he has being in decent form of late and with Barron in fine form i suspect they will try and run this from the front. He has the stamina to do that over a mile and on this ground i wouldn't like to be a hold up horse trying to peg back a front runner.

I'll be surprised if Warwick goes ahead. I live just down the road, we've had flash floods and heavy rain for over an hour now

I like the look of Jubilee in this race and as pointed out by Merlin Fahey has a great record at Newcastle.
I also quite like JR Jenkins Amosite in the 14.50 at Yarmouth at 16/1. I've tipped Running Mate but I might have an ew on Amosite as well.
