Post Posted: Tue Aug 31, 2010 5:13 pm     Post subject: ONE A DAY FOR SEPTEMBER

The following competition is simple. There will be one race picked at random each day and you have to try find the winner. Although with this comp rather than just typing the name of the horse you think will win you have to write up why you think they will win aswell. Anyone who doesn't put in the effort and writes something like "I fancy X to win because he is white and they are faster", "I like his name", "my friend told me so" etc. etc. won't be considered nor will any copy + pasting from other sites.

YOU MUST INCLUDE AT LEAST 4 SEPERATE POINTS ON WHY YOU FANCY THE HORSE.

So what we're looking for here is for you to look at the race and come up with a selection. Then post the name of the horse and write a few lines which must consist of more than 30 words with at least 4 seperate points on why you fancy it and that's it.

* If you want you can enter a second selection (must have write-up also) just in case your first choice turns out to be a non-runner and you don't have time to post again.

* If a race hasn't been posted by 6:00pm the night before then anyone can pick the race - the first one posted on the thread will be the selected race.

* You may not edit your post at any time. If your selection is a non-runner then just make a new post in the thread with your new pick.

* In the case of a selected race not going ahead due to a meeting being abandoned / unforeseeable circumstances then there will be two races selected for the following day instead.

SCORING SYSTEM

1st = 20pts + 3x SP
2nd = 12pts + 2x SP
3rd = 6pts + 1x SP
4th = 4pts
5th = 2pts

To encourage people to look away from favourites aswell there will be bonus points for the price of the horse as shown above. This means that if someone picks a 2/1 horse that wins they will get 26pts (20 for winning and then 3 times 2/1 is 6 -> 20+6=26) while if someone picks a 10/1 shot that comes second they will get 32pts (12+20=32).

PRIZES

1st = £10

2nd = £5

20:50 KEMPTON

An extremely difficult race to open this months competition with many of them holding a chance if on a going day. Josr’s Magic returns on the back of a recent victory when a length and three quarters to good for Amends at Lingfield two weeks ago under today’s pilot Amy Scott, her first appearance on the gelding and a possible winning thread under her guidance could be in the balance. Dovedon Angel, a filly trained by Gay Kelleway is another that is a likable contender if putting two recent poor efforts behind her put the drop in trip here should help and she returns to her latest winning mark. Formidable Guest is an interesting contender from the Pearce stable, a mare that has tumbled in the weights since scoring off a mark of seventy two earlier in the year and she’s one that seems to relish the artificial surface so a big danger to all if putting her best foot forward off a mark of fifty nine. Miss Formidable as been pretty poor since running sixth here to Manxman on debut but could be interesting this time around now going handicapping for the first time and shouldn’t be totally ruled out. The one im siding with though is the Gary Moore trained Turner’s Touch under seven pound claimer Chelsey Banks. His recent four efforts have been fairly disappointing which seen his latest at Brighton almost pulling up two out under the experienced Ryan Moore but prior to that his latest all weather outing seen him narrowly defeated here over this distance off today’s mark, a run that could see him go close and just maybe record his first victory in over two and a half years. The stable is going well of late and the claimer Miss Banks could prove to be the key.

TURNER'S TOUCH

Hi all and this is my first serious month in this tourny and is a bit of fun too!!

Right - I am going to sway with Blackstone Vegas.....this gelding had a poor run last time out but prior to that has found some consistent form following a bad race with a fair few horses beating him and going on to better.

The surface will not be a problem, I feel it will be held mid division making a push in the final 2 furlongs.

I started composing this post a couple of days ago but obviously could not finish it until after today’s race. As it could be deemed egotistical if I won and sour grapes if I didn’t – obviously now sour grapes Very Happy - I chose to enter a disclaimer earlier rather than check word for word in case of causing offence.

It is no more than a factual account of my very happy times shared with this crowd and the comments at the end are designed in the hope of getting more ' viewers ' involved.

Although not a keen follower of racing , I stumbled across this competition by chance at the end of March and chose to have a bit of fun in April.

Despite not picking the winner that first day , I found myself gloriously stuck at the top of the leader board by selecting Kerry’s Requiem who finished 2nd at 20/1. OK , so it was like Blackpool in this season’s Premiership. I eventually struck true form and ended the month in 12th place. Actually Blackpool may well settle for that now Very Happy

Yes , I was hooked. The learning curve had been interesting and I vowed to do better next time with my limited knowledge of recent racing.
Somehow luck took over from ability and I was 4th in May before winning in June.

The opening gambit of the thread was what took my eye – “ the following competition is simple “ - AND a novice had just proved it.
Yes , I was even more hooked. Beginners luck wore out but I have managed to be runner up in July and August - no doubt the start of the slippery slope. Yes
In June I almost became the first to break the 500 point barrier – how could I stop now ? Meoldmate also came close in July and for a long while in August it appeared that 500 may not even be sufficient to win this month. In that respect the conclusion was a slight anti-climax.
With 2 days to go I had tipped 8 winners for the month , and was showing 27.5 pts LSP and 95% ROI – virtually impossible figures to maintain. Yet a top 4 finish was not assured. Meoldmate had tipped 6 winners from slightly less tips yet was not even certain of a top 6 finish.

What a testament to the overall standard shown in this event.

TheBooyRooney , who just sneaked up to win , tipped his 4th winner on the final day but had importantly been more consistent in picking up place points. Which brings us on nicely to Kingly who scored 184 pts in the last 2 days to snatch 3rd ( having tipped just 2 winners ) when so many others had given up. 40/1 is a rare SP and if one of those had been returned 50/1 he would actually have copped the dosh for being runner up ! Motto – where there’s life , there’s hope.

From my first day experience to Kingly's efforts over the last two days it shows that the unique scoring of this event gives EVERYONE a chance even if going close rather than winning.

That statement is just as true for any beginner ( as my first post ) or Kingly in his second month , as well as for any seasoned campaigner.

FIRST COMMENT

It is so disappointing how many drop out long before the end of each month considering the effort put in to run this superb competition. It is superb not only for the standard of tipping but for the genuine camaraderie shown throughout.

SECOND COMMENT

There have been just short of 700 posts on this thread but almost 13,000 views ! Unless we average about 20 views each for every post we make , there are a lot of people out there who could dip their toes in the water and give it a go !! I’m sure you would enjoy it as much as I have ( and presumably the others that come back for more ).
The competition is free to enter and there is nothing to lose yet a lot to gain. Anyone joining in the fun for any length of time would almost certainly improve their own tipping and possibly make useful input for those already putting themselves above the parapet.

Whilst putting the finishing touches to this it is great to see a few new names. Welcome to you all.

Maybe we will all need to do EVEN BETTER this month to stay ahead.
Yes

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Unfortunately the prize offer has had to be withdrawn as it apparently transgresses the OLBG policy of not permitting members to offer prizes.

That doesn't stop us inundating meoldmate with posts trying to be the first to score 500 points. This is the 3rd anniversary of the competition so it is about time someone showed the old timers how to score heavily and consistently.

Apologies to all but the decision was outside the control of both myself and meoldmate who runs the event.

Post Posted: Tue Aug 31, 2010 10:50 pm     Post subject: One a day For September

Sept 1st Wednesday .850 Kempton park.

Dovedon Angel
This one is trained By Miss Gay Kellaway who has had a quiet period recently with not many runners only about 10 in the last 2 weeks. so hopefully if shes had something wrong in her yard it is now sorted. dovedon angel has been running over further tha todays 1m 3f in his last 3 starts one of which he won of a mark of 48. he now races of 50 and that could just be low enough to give him a chance at lifting this. Gays horses all like the all weather tracks.and with young declan cannon on board again who has rode the horse the last 3 times it should be able to get off the mark.currently priced up at about 6/1 can give a good start to the month Heres Hoping

Good luck to all who take part the more the merrier.

PS :- Nice write up davidg3907 and a generous gesture.

I read these write ups every day and have backed a few more winners this last month because of them. So thanks to all who take the time to share your ever valued opinions.

Carlton Scroop

Like this horses solid record on the track and its AW record altogether, 5 wins and 5 places. Won on track at this distance and the jockey and trainer are both very decent on the track. Saw Hayleys Touch as a possible alternative but am not keen on such a novice jockey but we will see how that pans out. Selections turf form is nothing to get excited about but thats irrelevant on this course. Hasnt ran since early August bt this horse has shown it can come off longer breaks than that and win.
