The next instalment of thr popular prizefighter series takes place on FridayNov 4th at the National Hall Olympia,
The lightWelterweights take center stage this time with -
3 former British Champions.
3 former European Champions.
1 former World Champion.
Micheal Grant-13-0-1 (1ko) 26yrs old--8/11
v
Jason Cook -27-2-0 (12ko)36 yrs old-5/4
Grant is a former ABA champ, is still very much a novice in the pro ranks
and has not boxed past 6rds, the format should suit him well.
At 34yrs old the oldest member of the line up, the former European Champ is coming off a 4th rd ko of Scott Jorden in Sept of this year after a 4yr Lay off , nickname the "power" he's an aggresive come forward banger.
PREDICTION-I have to go with Grant over the 3, but Cook will always be dangerous.
Barrie Jones -19-3-0 (7ko)24yrs old-4/6
V
Young Mutley-30-4-0(13ko)33yrs old-11/8
Jones has lost 3 of his last 4 fights but 2 of those have ben against Kell Brook and Souleymane M'baye (European Champ). Last bout was in Feb this year, points win over Jay Morris.
Young Mutley former British Champ, coming off a 3rd rd ko lost to Mihaita Mutu (25-4-2), a fighter that can blow hot and cold but a quality operator on his day.
Prediction- Mutley's got some decent names on his record, Colin Lynes, Micheal Jennings, Kevin Anderson. But his last time out lose is worrying, again i will go with the bookies, Jones to win.
Colin Lynes- 37-6-0(12kos) 32yrs old-8/13
V
David Barnes-26-1-1(11kos) 28yrs old-13/8
Former British Champ, Barnes has been out of the ring for 16months with injurys, A stylish southpaw with quick hands and feet, last time out he beat Barry Morrison on points.
Former British & European Champ, lynes brings the most strength in depth as far as opponents met,Young Mutley,Souleymane M'baye
Barry Morrison, Jr Witter,Lenny Dawes,Gianluca Branco. Has lost his last 3 fights, two bt split decision, the other he was sick.
Prediction-This is a hard one to call, both are smart boxers, had Barnes been active i would be more confident about picking him, as it is i will stick my neck out and stay with Barnes in the hope he can hit the ground running and prove to quick for Lynes over the 3.
Gavin Rees-29-1-0(14kos) 29yrs old-4/7
V
Ted Bami 31-5-0(13kos) 31yrs old -2/1
Former European Champ and Prize fighter Finalist last year at Welterweight , lost a spilt decision to Micheal Lomax, lost to Matthew Hatton tko rd6 in his last fight, March of this yr. Brings plenty of experiance to the table and a ko punch.
Former World Champ, lost belt in his first defence to Amir Khan victim Andriy Kotelnik, a pocket buzzsaw the format will suit him well, throws lots of punches and will set a breakneck pace.
Prediction-Rees is the favorite to win outright and i think he can start things off with a win over Bami, Ted is on pushover and is always a danager, but Rees will too busy over the 3.
SEMI_FINALS
Micheal Grant v Gavin Rees
Grant will have to step up in class again for this one, and will do his best to hold Rees off with sharp shots and movement, but Rees wil close the gap quickly and work the body and head, could be close but the edge goes to Rees
David Barnes v Barrie Jones
Barnes will be finding his rythem now and Jones will find it hard to land on the elusive Barnes fast punches silky movement win the day.
FINAL
Gavin Rees V David Barnes
Rees wil be on hyper-drive pressing forward and punching on stop, But Barnes will slip slide and turn Rees, all the time catching his oponent with fast sharp punches and catching him coming in, again it will be close but David can jump start his carrer as well pocket a handy £32,000 prize.
So there you have it my thoughts only, it a tough one to call this time, and my selection could well fall at the first hurdle.
I'm sure you have your own thoughts and views. Where ever you put your money good luck.
Good post ybsteam, gotta say that i agree with you on almost all the fights apart from the Mutley-Jones fight. In the outright betting im also going for David Barnes,he seems very confident and i think he has real class, the only problem is that he has had a long Lay-off due to a hand injury and has a real hard fight against Colin Lynes in his first round, but looking past this fact im going to back him at 5/1
I also think Young Mutley could pull of a suprise or two and im going for him to beat replacement Barrie Jones at 6/5.Mutley is very hot and cold but has a few good scalps to his name, and although he has a bad run of late his price reflects this and hopefully the chance to resurect his career has made him more focused and we can see the Mutley that beat Michael Jennings for the british title a few years ago.
I really fancied Barnes last week but I'm now going for Lynes to beat him in the first round and win it all.
Prizefighter preview market order
Gavin Rees (28-1, 14 KO’s) 11/4
Rees has the best pedigree in the competition having won the WBA light welterweight title in July 2007 against Frenchman Souleymane M’Baye (UD12). However he was made to loom quite silly in his first defence against the tough Ukrainian Andreas Kotelnik where he was stopped in the final round. Enzo Calzaghe will have got him in to great shape before this competition and that was shown in the weigh in, but my worry is Enzo’s gym has had struggles of late and Rees has had just one fight since his loss to Kotelnik. He has the style to win this Prizefighter but I’m just worried about his skills and defence especially in the first round where he faces Ted Bami who got to the final of the welterweight competition and was the heaviest on the scales.
Colin Lynes (31-6, 12 KO’s) 11/4
Lynes is a cracking little boxer who goes in to this with nothing to lose having lost his last three fights, all scheduled 12 rounders (two European, one British title fights). He was unlucky in Frances against M’Baye in his last fight and lost a close split decision, if he would have done a little bit more he could have won the fight. He’s a natural light welterweight who’s been in with some cracking fighters like Junior Witter, Juho Tolppola and Gianluca Branco, while he also has an eight round stoppage win over Young Mutley who he might face in the semis. He’s got a tough first round draw but I think this format will suit Lynes’ skills and if he gets past David Barnes I can see him winning it.
David Barnes (24-1-1, 11 KO’s) 5/1
He’s been so inactive of late and many big fights have fallen by the way side for him. Hasn’t been in the ring since July 2008 and a recent tune up fight on a Ricky Hatton card didn’t go ahead because of opponent problems. The boy can really box, he looked like a real fighter to watch in 2008 having won the British title against Ted Bami and then defending it against Barry Morrison, but things just haven’t worked out. My worry is he’ll have ring rust in his fight against Lynes and he’s not the opponent he would have wanted to face to start off with.
Ted Bami (26-5, 13 KO’s) 7/1
The biggest guy in the contest and he has plenty of advantages coming in to this one. Weight may have been issue because he hasn’t fought at light welter since losing against Barnes in the fight I mentioned and it may have been really tough for him to make weight. He will be the bigger guy against Gavin Rees in the first round but Bami was stopped in six by Matthew Hatton who doesn’t stop many fighters in March of this year and although he did reach the Prizefighter welterweights final, he might find himself outclassed by some better boxers at some point.
Michael Grant (12-0, 1 KO) 7/1
Quite an unknown fighter from Tottenham who’s been given a real chance here to mix it with some quality fighters. From what I’ve read and heard he’s got some real nice skills and his record shows that he is more of a boxer than a puncher. He’s got a good chance against Jason Cook in the first round but this is a guy who hasn’t had much backing from promoters and he hasn’t had the same amount of experience as the rest of the guys, so he might find things difficult if he comes up against Lynes or Barnes in the semis.
Barrie Jones (16-3, 7 KO’s) 10/1
My outsider pick for this competition, he’s been given a decent draw against Young Mutley and would be more than capable of matching Rees or Bami. Lost three of his last four fights but I was really impressed when I saw him box on a Frank Warren card at the Excel in London in December last year where he was unlucky against M’Baye who beat him by a point over eight rounds. He’s made the weight pretty comfortably and considering a lot of his fights have been at welterweight he could have more power than his opponents. This kid can box and he can punch and he doesn’t go down with a fight, I give him a decent chance.
Jason Cook (25-2, 12 KO’s) 10/1
The last of the three Welshman in the field and the one who has the smallest chance of winning in my opinion. Stopped Scott Jordan in four in Middlesbrough in September, his first fight for nearly four years. He showed that he’s a really powerful guy in that fight and his CV shows he was a quality fighter a number of years ago as he was European lightweight champion. He’ll fancy his chances against Michael Grant but I cant see him winning it.
Young Mutley (26-4, 13 KO’s) 16/1
The real outsider in the field and no surprise considering he was stopped in three by a journeyman on the undercard of Carl Froch v Andre Dirrelll a few weeks back. He’s got a British title win over Michael Jennings to his name but has had his problems which included losing in eight to Colin Lynes in a British and European title fight and I can see it being a tough night for him.
Predicted semi final line up
Michael Grant v Gavin Rees
Colin Lynes v Barrie Jones
Predicted final
Gavin Rees v Colin Lynes
Tough Prizefighter to predict because it’s a really quality field on paper but I think the bookies have got it right. Rees and Lynes are the two fighters who have operated at the highest level and I think Lynes may be able to win the competition. He’s experienced, he’s tough and he’s got good boxing skills, this is a new, fresh challenge for him and he will really fancy a win to set up a rematch with Lenny Daws for the British title. It could be a really tough semi for him though if he faced Barrie Jones who as I said has a good EW chance. _________________ Football and Boxing expert.
On the Sky website all 4 of the Pundits have gone for Barnes and Sportinglife have also gone for Barnes,I dont know if this is a good omen or a bad one ybsteam?
Welshie in response to your comment about Barnes being out for a long time i think that is the big question mark over his head especially when fighting Colin in the 1st round but for me if he gets through that fight i will have him odds on to win the whole thing.
Also Colin Lynes has'nt won a fight since January 2008 and has lost 3 in a row albeit against decent quality opponents but its hard for fighter to come back from a losing run like this and he will surely have doubts in his head, but like prizefighters before it is very hard to predict and you can easily make a case for all 8 to go on and win it.
Really didn't expect so many people to be going for Barnes, because we are taking a leap of faith that he come's back to somthing like he was befor the injury.
Lynes is a big danger, but over the 3 Barnes hopefully can proved too tricky, and go on and win the whole thing.
Too me Barnes had the beating of Lynes in that fight but didnt push it enough, should of come forward more especially in the final round.
All my hopes on Mutley now for my outside bet!
cracking final, happy i got that prediction right but I didnt expect Rees to be in the form he was tonight, he showed why he was a world champion. Would have been happy whoever won because I'm a Welshman and a fan of Lynes, but Rees was in cracking form and hopefully he gets a crack at Lenny Daws' British title now. _________________ Football and Boxing expert.
Think Mutley was a little unlcuky against Lynes that was never a knockdown, either way i think rees would have won had anyone been infront of him in the final. His style was perfect for 3 rounds, just coming forward and keeping busy, would like to see that final over 12 rounds because there is no way rees could of kept that pace.
Wll done Welshie, the dragon roared tonight,
Barnes did look rusty, but i agree he could have pushed it a bit more, an.d i still think a tuned up Barnes would have gone further, he would'nt have won though
A great final. I didn't want it to end. Good write up and selection on the finalists. That has got me right in the mood to watch Khan tomorrow. _________________ Liverpool 1 vs 3 Aston Villa - The moment we got Thumped by the worst Aston Villa Team in Living Memory is the Moment I waved goodbye to ALL European Football For 2013/2014.
