premier is about 80% forign player

Sorry i'm a bit of a geek so thought i'd find the exact figure from last year.

58.82% is the figure based on this sites nationality stats http://www.football-lineups.com/tourn/FA_Premier_League_2011-2012/Stats/Nationalities/

I'm not sure that is exactly killing England's chances myself. The fact that most of the teams play better football because they have foreign players doing a lot of their passing and creative play says a lot about English footballers but surely it should be having a positive influence.

Portugal also has 58% foreign players all be it England has a population 6 times that of Portugal. Maybe it's the fact that 42% of their players are Brazilian which makes them a better side than their population dictates? In fact only 2 of Portugal's starting 11 in their last match even play in their own country.

There has been 13 Euro tournaments and the best England has done has been 2 semi finals, 1 before and 1 during the Premiership era. I don't believe that Englands league has always been dominated by foreign players and so this hasn't always been the issue.

There has also been 19 World Cups of which England has only made the semi final twice. Including the 1 win.

Basically England compared to other European nations has an awful record in international football from the very beginning.

Roy Hodgson could only pick what was available and I think injuries dictated how he approached the tournament. We simply did not have the players to keep possession well enough at that level, so England had to be hard to beat and Hodgson achieved that.

I think the back four were outstanding with Glen Johnson an absolute revelation. Joe Hart did ok but was not quite at his best. Gerrard and Parker did well whilst Milner did the job he was there for. Welbeck and Carroll showed glimpses of potential for the future.

The biggest disappointment has to be Rooney - he did not show anything in 2 games and I think he adversely affected the team's performance. His inclusion meant that Ashley Young had to play on the wing - Young simply does not have the pace or guile to be a winger at this level. Walcott flattered to deceive and it is questionable whether he will ever progress enough to be effective for England.

As far as the future is concerned, it could really go either way. Hart, Johnson and Lescott look to be fixtures in the side now and potentially some fine young players in the shape of Wilshere, Cleverley, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Phil Jones, Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling, Adam Johnson and Kyle Walker. However, those players will need to appear regularly for their club sides and kick on from what they have achieved so far. In addition, can Welbeck, Carroll or Sturridge really become the regular goalscorer that Hodgson must crave and can Rooney actually show his best form at a major tournament?

The other big worry is that several of the best performers at the Euros are the wrong side of 30 (Terry, Cole, Gerrard and Parker) and may not have the legs to cope with the conditions in Brazil a couple of years from now. However, despite all these issues, at least England have a manager who has created a unity within the camp and has built a solid foundation.

Sorry but cannot agree about Caroll showing 'potential'. He is a one trick pony, poor with his feet and his finishing it poor.

He scored yes, but other than that showed and did nothing, he seems pretty good at giving stupid free kicks away by kicking oppositions legs though.

Ill give him a good finish for his goal but other than that hes just a big bloke and the sooner we get rid of players who have NO technical ability the sooner england will become a better footballing nation.

Looks at the guys left in the tournement, which one has a lumbering striker who they hoof the ball to ? None of them, everyone of Germany, Portugal, Italy and Spain have suburb technical ability and to get to the top in football thats what you have to have.

The big bloke up top will soon be a thing of the past.

I think my statement about Andy Carroll was "glimpses of potential" and 1 goal in one start at the Euros isn't bad. He is still a young player who needs to get regular games for Liverpool under his belt before anyone can start judging what he can and can't do. Time may prove him to be just another big lump but he can't be judged on the Italy game. When he came on, the ball was simply hoofed up to him to fight for because the players were too knackered to do anything else.

The temptation is always to try and follow what other nations are doing particularly if they are being successful. When France reigned supreme in the 90's, you needed tall, athletic players like Vieira and Henry - at that time, I suspect no one in England was championing the idea of trying to find a bunch of little blokes who had clever movement around the pitch, could pass to someone in the same coloured shirt and didn’t have a panic attack when an opponent came within 5 yards of them.

It is blindingly obvious that we need to do better in possession of the ball but trying to play a certain way because Spain do it or Italy do it is not the way forward. Teams dominate like Spain because they are fortunate to have group of special players who have all come together in one team. In my opinion, the dividing line for success for other nations (including England) is whether you have any top class players and whether they can show their best form. Portugal and Italy have got to the latter stages of this tournament by having their best player play to his potential and Germany have got there by having their top striker do what he is picked to do. Technical ability is all well and good but ultimately it is about how your top players perform – the Dutch and the French have plenty of technical ability but their top players were not good enough when it mattered and the same goes for our top player.

The men's GB football games are pretty much sold out so he was probably used as a marketing tool, his job now done.I like Becks, but he has had his moments of glory, then chose USA soccer for ridiculous earnings, closed his David Beckham academy here in the east end No Let the younger players have some time in the spotlight,Olympic football is tinpot stuff anyway, roll on the real football season. Just spotted that Paddy Power are doing a special on Mario Balotelli's baby name. Mario is favourite of course at 2-1. Maybe there's some value in Roberto at 40-1? Need to work out where to invest next years student loan... Confused

Does anyone know of a free website that has simple possession stats (ie. 47-53%) in all of the games in the past 2011/12 Eredivisie season?

In my era we all used to invest in Scottish and Newcastle breweries and watching Neighbours and Home and Away Very Happy

Which is probably why I never made it out in the big world of fixing Libor rates Cheeky
