R.I.P. Alex you will be sadly missed.
Yes remembered the 1982 final very well.
As i think it was Alex got me into snooker late 70 s.
Remembered also those days when you can drink and
smoke thru out the game.
You will be never for gotton. |

I remember meeting Alex at an exhibition match in Halifax where he was playing Jimmy White. "True gentleman" isn't a phrase usually associated with the guy but on this occasion he persuaded the security personnel to let in the fans an hour earlier than scheduled because it was absolutely lashing it down outside.
On the flip side, at the mid-session interval I remember going for a pee and Alex was relieving himself in the next urinal, pint of Guiness in one hand, obviously the worse for wear. The second session of the match was a bit of a fiasco, as both Alex and Jimmy went for one outrageous shot after another, missing more often than not.
Alex in his prime was a true genius on the snooker table, his talent and charisma helping the sport to achieve mass media popularity, but ultimately he was his own worst enemy.
Forever the "People's Champion". R.I.P. Alex "Hurricane" Higgins. |

Never nice to hear of a life ending too soon but I don't buy into this legend status. Yes he was a character but on the whole he was a fairly unpleasant character. I used to bump into him on a few occasions when he drank & bet in Ramsbottom ( Lancs) & he was an obnoxious drunk. Always picking arguments , spending his entire life in the pub & bookies & had a life punctuated with violence to others.
I may not want all my sportsmen to be squeaky clean but to portray him as a legend air brushs a lot of reality out of it. wasting such a huge talent isn't something to be proud of.
Nether less

jeremiah, i too met alex quite a few times when he lived in salford and he used to play a bit at our club (going back 20 years now). yes off the table as u say he was a bit of a so and so to say the least and i've heard many stories from other pro's about him but i dont know how u can say he wasn't a legend on the table. he absolutely changed the way snooker was played. the likes of eddie charlton, ray reardon and john spencer were all very good but they were slow and boring, he came along and started playing shots they wouldn't have even dreamed of. imo the word genius is thrown about way too often nowadays but he in my eyes truely was on the table. him and jimmy white was the reason why i, and i'm sure many more people started playing.
R.I.P ALEX = SNOOKER LEGEND. _________________ I wish i had a pound for every pound i've spent, cos then i'd have all my money back. |

I must disagree with you JC. I to met Alex , and the very points you mention are in part, what made him a legend
Like it or not, there is no doubt that he will go down as one of the Sporting Legends let alone snooker |

Was away for the weekend when I heard the news - very sad. He was great to watch and took on shots no other player would consider.
Sadly, I never met the man but friends had seen him around Belfast in recent months and it was clear just how badly the Hurricane's health had failed. I suppose it was only a matter of time but let's remember him at his best. |
