Snooker player Stephen Lee was arrested following an investigation into suspicious betting patterns, police said on Friday.

The player, from Trowbridge in Wiltshire, was arrested on Thursday, West Midlands Police confirmed.

A spokesman said: "A 35-year-old man from Wiltshire was arrested on Thursday February 11 on suspicion of cheating.

"This follows a joint operation where West Midlands Police have assisted the Gambling Commission, following their concerns about suspicious betting patterns."

The father of four children, he was once ranked fifth in the world but has now fallen to 25th place.

Not the first time this has been mentioned with Stephen involved, which is a shame, as on his day he could be a great player, but his frustratiosn were born out of always finding one or two too good when the pressure was on

I think we all have to be careful what we say here, but...

Hes so fat and so out of shape its going to be very difficult to prove he threw a match rather than he just lost.

He usually is drenched with sweat within half an hour and his heavy breathing is a bad sign.

My point is, he shouldnt need to throw a match as hes been so poor and so out of shape for 95% of the last 2 years anyway!

Not necessarily shocked about what they were suggesting but I am (very) shocked about the player that allegedly has done this and by the look of it he is caught bang to rights as Dammo said.
This could be the final nail in snookers coffin no matter what Hearn has in mind for the game but more importantly for us..............what about the poor punters that would have had money on him to win the world championship at the crucible this year and in previous tournaments this year, there has to be question marks over all his previous performances now.
Although nothing is proven yet I can't help but think there will be a few more stories like this coming out in the next few months as the can of worms is opened.

Still.............He is the last player I would have thought of, that would have got involved in something like this.

totally agree swash, I never expected John Higgins to do something. You could see someone who's struggling in terms of qualifiers and outside top 16/32 doing this kind of thing e.g Stephen Lee (not saying he has done) but not a player who is so talented and has been so succesful in the game.

I'm saying this before I've read the article but this is dreadful news for snooker and a big shame after such a good world championships and on the same day as the final.
