I know that David Nalbandian was rather stupid to kick an advertising hoarding which resulted in a Line Judge getting injured at Queens last week, but why on earth are the Police thinking of charging him with assault?
Surely he did not intend to hurt the Line Judge
What next - A player serves and the ball hits a Line Judge at the back of the court. Will the Police rush on court to arrest the player?
If a Cricketer hits a six into the crowd, is that classed as assault?

It's called taking responsibility for your actions. No he didn't mean to hit the line judge but he was performing a violent action from which someone got hit (serving a tennis ball or hitting a six or playing a golf shot is not performing an act of violence).
Let's say you're in a bar and someone insults you then hits you. You decide to take action and swing a punch back at the guy, but he ducks and you hit someone else. You didn't mean to do that and hitting them was an accident, but you'll still be charged with an assault because it's the result of your violent action. _________________ ----

| He may not have intended to hurt the line judge but with the hoarding about 12 inches from him what on earth did he think would happen, deserves everything he gets in my book. |

He did it in the heat of the moment, he definitely didn't mean it and was apologetic about the incident when interviewed when the match was awarded to Cilic.
They should just let the incident rest, Nalbandian already got fined and lost all the prize money he won in the tournament including matches he won in the previous round. That's bad enough for a sportsperson who doesn't have a contract and livelihood depends on how well they perform in tournaments. |

Call me old fashioned but i would have loved it if all the line judges had got up and steamed into the bad tempered spoilt brat with tennis rackets and left
bleeding on the court ...pretty sure it wouldnt happen again..... but that was just a dream......... |

ye i agree that was really bad by nalbandian but i would have some sympathy toward him, if i were at the head of ATP i would fine him $500000 & hand out a 3month ban forcing him to miss 2 majors[us open & wimby].
again i do have sympathy & a years ban is too much, he was top5 in the world at the height of his career!
is is terrible publicity for the game though right b4 wimby, a heavier fine for me was the way to look at it & as i said a little holiday! |

Yes he took a violent action and should accept the consequences, if they are fair.
Good God, he kicked an advertisement board causing a minor injury. Why should he receive a record fine and Ban. Joey Barton stubbed a cigar out in someones eye and only got a £60,000 fine. Why should Nalbandian receive much more? I mean $500000.00? Daniel Kollerer although rightly banned for life got only a fraction of that sum of money issued as a fine.
It's an overreaction. Much worse happens in other sports and very little is ever done. And this includes sports with a much wider audience than Tennis. I think the actions taken with the fine were right compared to the action taken against other sportsman in worse incidents.
He knew he had done wrong and was apologetic. Hardly see why he should solely be made an example of.

Police only treat most assaults as a slap on the wrist now. Let alone "accidental GBH". Maybe a further fine for "damages" for missed work if it came to that. |

It's a difficult situation.
He got the right punishment for the crime, end of story and all sports are different and have to be treated as such.
Banning a footballer for violent conduct is a complete opposite as he gets paid anyway, whereas a tennis player, golfer and other sports stars have to play to earn their money (sponsorship excluded)
Nalbandian lost his earnings and some vital ranking points which is more than enough punishment, after all he didn't actually hit the line judge, he just lost his temper and got frustrated.
When rules are set up for sports nobody ever thinks that something terrible that happens is ever going to happen so the whole world jump on the bandwagon.
I am sure we have all been in a situation where we have done something, might even have been a sport and found ourselves getting frustrated and doing something that you shouldn't.
I know these professionals should know better but at the end of the day they are only human and things happen in the heat of the moment |
