Euro 2012 Group A Preview

Euro 2012 Euro 2012 Group A Preview

00/00 00:00

Group A

Poland

Fifa Ranking: 65
Manager: Franciszek Smuda (Since October 2009)
Captain: Jakub Blaszczykowski (Kuba)
Star Players: Wojciech Szczesny, Lukasz Piszczek, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Robert Lewandowski
Penalty Taker/s: Jakub Blaszczykowski, Robert Lewandowski

Poland's Euro 2008 campaign was one to forget. They finished bottom of Group B with just one point. They failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup due to a very disappointing qualifying campaign. After this, Franciszek Smuda was appointed as manager to restore pride to the Polish national team.

Poland qualified for Euro 2012 as co-hosts. This means that for the past two years they have not had any competitive international matches. They play their home matches at the National Stadium in Warsaw and have the significant advantage of playing their opening two games at their home ground. Home support for Poland can guide them through Group A. However, due to the overwhelming hopes and expectations on the co-hosts, the young squad could crumble under the pressure.

Poland's results in non competitive matches have been positive. They drew 0-0 to a strong Portugal side and drew 2-2 to Germany. Had it not been for a 94th minute goal from Cacau, Poland would have run out winners against their close rivals. Poland have also managed to beat teams such as Hungary, Belarus, Georgia, Norway, Moldova and a second string Argentina side. They have also gained positive draws away to South Korea and at home to Mexico.

A lot of pressure will be on the shoulders of the three Dortmund men. Piszczek, Kuba and Lewandowski have had a fantastic season with their club and now it is time to reproduce that club form at the international level. Lewandowski scored 22 goals and provided 8 assists in the Bundesliga this season. Kuba scored 6 goals and provided 9 assists in the league this season. Both Kuba and Lewandowski are Poland's main attacking threats and these two have been scoring for their country in the friendlies.

Poland have an ideal opportunity to qualify from Group A. They have avoided any of the big nations in the group stages and will have the support of the home crowd during their matches. Although they are a young squad, they have a number of talented players who can shine at the big stage. Their confidence has improved due to positive results in the friendlies against difficult sides. Their aim is to qualify from Group A and they should feel confident enough to progress from the weakest group out of the four.

Greece

Fifa Ranking: 14
Manager: Fernando Santos (Since July 2010)
Captain: Giorgos Karagounis
Star Players: Giorgos Karagounis, Dimitris Salpigidis, Theofanis Gekas
Penalty Taker/s: Giorgos Karagounis

The Euro 2004 winners failed to defend their title at Euro 2008. It was a terrible defence of their title as they lost all three group games. At the 2010 World Cup, Greece went out at the group stages after gaining just one win. A lot of blame was placed on the negative tactics deployed by Otto Rehhagel.

Under Fernando Santos, Greece qualified top of the Euro 2012 qualifying Group F. They finished two points ahead of Croatia and remained undefeated during the qualifying campaign. However, Group F was arguably one of the the weakest qualifying groups. Furthermore, Greece's performances during the campaign were not the greatest. They drew at home to Georgia and almost drew 0-0 away to Malta. A lot of their points came from late winners or equalising goals. They scored an 84th minute equalising goal against Latvia, a 94th minute winning goal against Malta and a last 10 minute double against Georgia to secure qualification. They scored the fewest goals of any of the group winners and struggled to score in the first half of the qualifying games.

Greece have struggled in their non-competitive matches. They recently drew 1-1 at home to Belgium, even though Belgium played most of the second half with 10 men. They lost 3-1 at home to Romania and drew 1-1 at home to Russia.

Greece are heavily relying on their 'old guard' ahead of this tournament. Karagounis, Katsouranis, Salpigidis and Gekas are all over the age of 30. However, these four players remain the heart of the Greece national team. Other than Kyriakos Papadopoulos, there is not much rising talent in Greece's Euro 2012 squad.

This looks set to be another disappointing major tournament for the Euro 2004 winners. They have struggled under the reign of Fernando Santos and are heavily relying on the older players. Greece struggle in the first half of games and struggle to score. An early exit is very likely.

Greece eliminated at Group Stage- 8/13 Coral/ Ladbrokes

Russia

Fifa Ranking: 11
Manager: Dick Advocaat (Since July 2010, resigning after Euro 2012)
Captain: Andrei Arshavin
Star Players: Andrei Arshavin, Alan Dzagoev, Roman Pavlyuchenko
Penalty Taker/s: Roman Pavlyuchenko

After losing 4-1 to Spain in their first game of Euro 2008, Russia defied all odds and reached the semi finals of Euro 2008. They faced Spain once again but lost 3-0 to the eventual champions. Russia failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup as they went out to Slovenia on away goals in the playoffs. Dick Advocaat was brought in to secure qualification to Euro 2012.

Under Dick Advocaat, Russia qualified with ease from Group B. They topped the group with 7 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss and with just 4 goals conceded. However, the Russian national team faced criticisms for their performances during the qualification campaign. Accusations of complacency and laziness came as a result of the 0-0 draw with Armenia and the 1-0 win over Macedonia.

Russia have gained mixed results from their friendly matches. They gained a well deserved 2-0 win away to Denmark and a 1-0 win at home to Serbia. However, the negative results come from the 1-0 loss away to Iran and the 0-0 draw at home to Cameroon.

Advocaat has the luxury of choosing from three quality strikers. Pavlyuchenko, Pogrebnyak and Kerzhakov are all fighting for a spot in the starting eleven. Pavlyuchenko is a clincal striker with an eye for goal whilst Kerzhakov and Pogrebnyak have been in fantastic form for their clubs. Kerzhakov has scored 18 goals in the league for Zenit whilst Pogrebnyak has been sensational since joining Fulham in the January transfer window.

Russia have a talented squad and an experienced manager for this campaign. This combination is central to success and Russia should be regarded as potential dark horses at Euro 2012. Key players such as Arshavin, Pavlyuchenko and Pogrebnyak are rediscovering their form following January transfer moves. Alan Dzagoev is a rising star and he can make his mark at Euro 2012. Russia are defensively strong and have dangerous attacking options. They should top Group A but there is always a worry of complacency with the Russian national side, especially as the manager will resign after the tournament.

Russia to qualify- 1/2 Coral

Czech Republic

Fifa Ranking: 26
Manager: Michal Bilek (Since October 2009)
Captain: Tomas Rosicky
Star Players: Petr Cech, Tomas Rosicky, Milan Baros
Penalty Taker/s: Michal Kadlec

Czech Republic suffered a devastating end at Euro 2008. They led 2-0 during the final group game, but three goals in the last 15 minutes sent them crashing out of the tournament. The disappointment did not stop there as Czech Republic failed to qualify for 2010 World Cup.

Czech Republic were drawn in a difficult qualifying group with World Champions Spain. As Spain dominated, Czech Republic struggled and were in a battle with Scotland for 2nd place. A controversial last minute penalty against Scotland allowed Czech Republic to gain the advantage over Scotland in the bid for second place. Czech Republic managed to secure 2nd place and convincingly beat Montenegro in the playoffs. Czech Republic's main problem during their qualifying campaign was their inability to score. They only managed to score 12 goals, the lowest out of all the finalists during the qualification stages.

Czech Republic have suffered mixed results during their non competitive matches. The positive results came from the 4-0 win against Ukraine and the 1-1 draw to the Republic of Ireland. However, there were many negative results. They lost 3-0 to Norway, 4-2 to Croatia and had goalless draws against Peru and Japan.

The Czech Republic side is clearly lacking in quality. Although Tomas Rosicky has rediscovered his form and Petr Cech has been outstanding for Chelsea, the Czech Republic side seems weak. The midfield and attack lacks quality and depth. Milan Baros has struggled for Galatasary this season and has often found himself on the bench. Tomas Necid has just returned from a long term knee injury so he will not be at his best during Euro 2012.

This Czech Republic side will struggle at Euro 2012. The defence looks vulnerable, whilst the midfield and attack lacks depth and quality. Under Michal Bilek, Czech Republic have struggled. Although they have the advantage of playing all three group games at the same stadium, Russia and Poland will cause this Czech side problems. A shock early exit is on the cards for Czech Republic.

Bayern Munich V Chelsea

Champ League Bayern Munich v Chelsea

19/05 19:45

This is the biggest night of the season for both clubs. Both have a chance to become Europe's elite footballing side. It will be a tight, tense affair but the German side look too strong for the English, and this should tell.

Bayern Munich play this game at their home ground. This is a significant advantage for the Bavarians. Although it will be a neutral atmosphere, playing at home always gives you confidence and it will settle the nerves that the players will obviously have.

Bayern's home record is to be feared. Although they finished second in the Bundesliga, their defensive record at home was incredible. They conceded just 6 at home and had won 14 of there 17 home games.

Let's not forget that Bayern Munich topped the group of death in the Champions League group stages. They won 2-0 at home against the Premier League champions Man City and will have no fear against another English side at home. Bayern Munich have won all 3 of their knockout home legs in the Champions League. A 7-0 win over Basel, a 2-0 win over Marseille and a 2-1 win over Mourinho's Real Madrid side shows that the Allianz Arena is a difficult place to go. What is even more impressive about Bayern Munich is that they played like the home side at the Bernabeu. They controlled the game in Spain and deserved to win in 90 minutes.

Everything about Bayern Munich, especially at home, puts fear into the opposition. However, Chelsea will use the result against Dortmund to spur them on and cause a shock. In the DFB Pokal Final last weekend, Bayern Munich were embarrassed. They lost 5-2 to their rivals in 90 minutes. This could cause one of two outcomes. A positive response or a negative response. Chelsea will hope and pray for the latter.

Chelsea have reached the Champions League final against all odds. I don't think any person would have guessed that Chelsea would win the FA Cup and reach the Champions League final. They were 3-1 down away in the first leg against Napoli. Somehow Di Matteo has turned everything around. They got through that game, they beat Benfica and remarkably knocked out the favourites Barcelona. Even more remarkable is that they did not lose any leg to Barcelona. Barcelona dominated at Stamford Bridge but somehow Chelsea won 1-0. At the Camp Nou, Barcelona dominated and Chelsea went down to 10 men. However, the English side came away with an incredible 2-2 draw. To get through all that you have to say luck is on Chelsea's side. Is the fairytale going to get a happy ending?

My answer is no. Chelsea defended for their lives against Barcelona and only got through the match due to Barcelona not having a plan B. This has been Barcelona's downfall this season. Bayern Munich do have a plan B. They can change to a 4-4-2 with the likes of Muller and Olic. These two can be game changers and Heyencks is not afraid of changing tactics.

Ultimately, this match all comes down to the injury and suspensions both sides face. Bayern Munich are without Badstuber, Gustavo and Alaba. This means Contento will come in at left back, or Lahm will switch to left back and Rafinha will come in at right back. Judging by the match against Cologne, Contento will play at left back and Tymoshchuk will play at centre half. The worry is Tymoschchuk. He is a natural anchorman not a defender. If Drogba can rise to the occasion, which he usually does, he can cause him a lot of problems. Muller is likely to start in the attacking midfield role, with Kroos lining up along side Schweinsteiger.

Bayern Munich's suspension problems are nothing compared to Chelsea's. Chelsea are without Ivanovic, Ramires, Raul Meireles and captain John Terry. Florent Malouda is a doubt and there are rumours that Bertrand will play at left back. The problem for Chelsea is that Bayern Munich's midfield can control and game and pick out the perfect passes. In this sense, Ramires is a big loss. Another problem is that Ribery, Robben and Gomez are all starting. Ivanovic and Terry are huge losses. Can Bosingwa cope with Ribery? Ribery has been fantastic this season. Cahill and David Luiz are both doubts and even if both play, how match fit are they? Chelsea have too many suspensions and fitness concerns to deal with one of the best attacking teams in the world.

At home, Bayern Munich are too strong for most opposition. Unfortunately for Chelsea, the fairytale with have an unhappy ending.

Barcelona V Malaga

Spanish Barcelona v Malaga

02/05 19:00

Barcelona are out of the Champions League, lost their La Liga crown bar a miracle and have lost their beloved manager Pep Guardiola. However, the players keep on going for the fans and the coach. A remarkable 7-0 win at the weekend showed that the Barcelona players are playing for Pep, the fans and for Messi. They want Messi to win the golden boot and break Gerd Muller's record of 67 goals in a season.

With Barcelona playing with no pressure, we should see them cruise to victory tonight. They were 3-0 by half time at the weekend away to Rayo Vallecano. They have a fantastic record of leading at half time at home this season. In 15 of their 17 home games, they have led at half time. The only 2 that they failed to do this were a 0-0 draw to Sevilla and the el Classico loss to Real Madrid.

With no pressure on them, expect Barcelona to get off to a flying start. They want to score goals and they went Messi to keep scoring.

Atletico Madrid V Real Sociedad

Spanish Atletico Madrid v Real Sociedad

02/05 17:00

Atletico Madrid are being backed heavily into short odds for todays game. There's a simple reason for this, Real Sociedad have nothing to play for whilst Atletico Madrid have a top 4 spot to play for.

This is a must win match for Atletico Madrid. Simeone has come out and said the players will fight for a Champions League spot until the last day of the season. When Simeone took over, a potential Champions League spot seemed unthinkable. The Argentinian has done wonders to get this club to the final of the Europa League and to get them in the position they are in in the La Liga.

Atletico Madrid have won 4 of their last 5 league games at home, with the loss coming to Real Madrid. They are a strong side at home and should get the vital 3 points today.

Real Sociedad are safe from relegation. They sit in 13th place and the best they can hope for is a top 10 finish. They are on an unbeaten run of 6 games. However, they have lost 10 away from home this season.

Atletico Madrid won away to Real Sociedad 4-0 in January. Falcao was the hat trick hero that day and he should find himself on the scoresheet today. Atletico Madrid won this fixture 3-0 last season.

With this being a must win game for Atletico Madrid, they should beat their opponents tonight who have nothing to play for. Falcao should be expected to get on the scoresheet.

France Le Championnat 2011/12

French France Le Championnat 2011/12

20/05 20:00

Last night we witnessed Montpellier throw the title away. What should have been a routine win turned into a complete disaster for the Ligue 1 leaders. 2 dropped points was not the worst thing that happened last night. Belhanda was shown a straight red card and raised his hands. I doubt we will see Montpellier's key player for the last 3 games of the season.

Montpellier sit 6 points clear of PSG and have 3 game remaining. Without Belhanda, Montepellier have to travel to Rennes. Rennes are currently in a fight for 4th spot so this game will mean everything to them. They have only lost 2 at home. If this fixture wasn't difficult enough, Montpellier face Lille a week after. Lille are in form and in a battle for second spot. They can also mount a late title challenge with a win tonight. Montpellier travel to Auxerre on the last day. Auxerre may need a result from this game to survive relegation.

PSG face St Etienne tonight and this should be a win. They then travel away to Valenciennes which is a difficult fixture against a team who has won 10 at home. They also have to play Rennes but they will be at home. However, Rennes have won the most away games in the league. Their last game sees them away to Lorient which should be another difficult game as Lorient play on an artificial surface and have lost just 4 at home.

For most of the season it seemed Lille were destined to miss out on the top 3. However, it now seems that they are capable of mounting a late title challenge. 6 wins from their last 7 games sees them 8 points behind Montpellier with a game in hand. Tonight they play Nice away from home. A win tonight will see them 5 points behind with 3 to play. This should be followed up with a win over Caen. The tough match comes away to Montpellier but Lille are more than capable of causing a shock. They have an easy last day match at home to Nancy.

Although they will have to win all 4 remaining games, Lille are more than capable of doing this. It could end up with PSG and Lille on level points at the top but Lille look capable of improving their goal difference with their run in.

Man City V Man Utd

Premiership Man City v Man Utd

30/04 20:00

Sir Alex Ferguson describes this as a "derby of amazing proportions." A loss here will see Man City get one hand on their rivals Premier League trophy. Anything other than a win for Man City will see Man Utd take one huge step towards a 20th Premier League crown. It is difficult to decide the outcome of one of the biggest Manchester Derbies in recent times. This title decider sees the best home side in the league take on the best away side in the league. With all the pressure on both sides, an exciting draw is on the cards.

Just a few weeks ago the title race looked over. Man City were 8 points behind their rivals and were more interested in making sure that their rivals could not win the league at the Etihad Stadium. However, with 3 wins in a row and Man Utd dropping 5 points, the gap is down to 3 points. Furthermore, Man City have improved their goal difference dramatically. They have scored 12 and conceded just 1 in their last 3 league games. A win tonight will see them top the Premier League with 2 games to go.

Even though Mancini continues to play down Man City's title chances, the pressure is firmly on his players shoulders. They have done remarkably well to get back into this title race and cannot self destruct tonight. We have seen what pressure can do to this Man City side. A shock performance at home saw them drop 2 points to Sunderland. In all honesty they were lucky to get a point from that game. They went out of the FA Cup at home to Man Utd in January and the Europa League to Sporting Lisbon. They also lost 1-0 at home in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi final. When the pressure is on, Man City fail to deliver. Anything other than a win is a disaster.

Sir Alex Ferguson must be shocked that his Man Utd side has allowed Man City back in this title race. A loss to Wigan was not a great result but letting a two goal lead slip at home is simply unacceptable. They were defensively poor against Everton last weekend. Rafael was poor, Jonny Evans slipped back to his old ways, Rio Ferdinand was shaky at the back and Patrice Evra does not look defensively solid anymore. The problem with this Man Utd side is that the defence has been poor for most the season. The loss of Vidic and Fletcher has been huge. The defence has to be at their best tonight and the midfield must support the defenders.

Darren Fletcher has not been replaced this season and he has been a big loss. These are the types of games where he is influential. Man Utd have lacked a Fletcher like player this season. Ferguson may look to Phil Jones tonight to play the ball winning midfielder role. Or he may go for Park Ji Sung to play that centre midfield role. It is likely that he will go for a 4-5-1 today. The pressure is on both sides but Man Utd have experience on their side. As long as they do not defend like they did against Everton, Man Utd have every chance of avoiding defeat tonight.

Whilst Man City tend to crumble under pressure, Man Utd tend to thrive under pressure. Man Utd will be happy to settle for a draw and that is the likely outcome in this Manchester Derby.

Bayern Munich V VfB Stuttgart

German Bayern Munich v VfB Stuttgart

28/04 14:30

With Dortmund already winning the Bundesliga and Bayern Munich already securing 2nd spot, 9/2 is a huge price for Stuttgart to beat a weakened Bayern Munich side.

With two cup finals on their way, it is likely that Jupp Heynckes will be concentrating on them rather than the two remaining league games. The big names will be rested to avoid injury and be fully fit the DFP Pokal final and the Champions League final.

Bayern Munich pulled off a remarkable upset by knocking out Real Madrid on Wednesday. After 120 minutes, the Bavarians defeated Mourinho's side in the penalty shoot out. In all honesty, Bayern Munich should have won that game in 90 minutes. Having played 120 minutes, the majority of the starting 11 will be rested. The likes of Olic, Rafinha, Tymoschuck, Muller, Pranjic, Usami, Contento and Petersen should be in the starting line up at the weekend. Lahm, Badstuber, Alaba, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Gomez, Ribery and Robben should get a well deserved rest.

Bayern Munich may have nothing to play for but Stuttgart still have 4th place to play for. They are currently in 5th place, 6 points behind 4th. Although it is extremely unlikely that they can snatch 4th place, you can never say never in football. Stuttgart need a win to secure a Europa League spot and can wrap it up at the Allianz Arena.

Stuttgart are in fantastic form heading into this game. They are undefeated in 10 games and have won 7 of those games. They have shown that they can be a danger away from home by grabbing a 4-4 draw away to Dortmund.

Stuttgart are in form and have more desire to win this game. Bayern will field a weakened side and the result of this match does not matter to them.

Rafael Nadal Vs Janko Tipsarevic

Tennis Rafael Nadal vs Janko Tipsarevic

27/04 16:45

The clay court king is in action today against Janko Tipsarevic. On this surface, Rafael Nadal should have no trouble in defeating his opponent.

Rafael Nadal loves this time of season as it is the clay court season. He was in sensational form at the Monte Carlo Masters. He won the tournament without dropping a set and convincingly beat Novak Djokovic in the final. He has started the 2012 Barcelona Open in similar fashion, winning both games without dropping a set.

Tipsarevic has looked in good form, winning both games without dropping a set, but he faces the most difficult player on this surface. Rafael Nadal will be too good for him. Janko Tipsarevic could play the game of his life but that may not even be good enough to defeat Rafa Nadal on the clay court.

Rafael Nadal should easily win this 2-0.

Tennis Feliciano Lopez vs David Ferrer

David Ferrer should easily overcome Feliciano Lopez in the Quarter Finals of the 2012 Barcelona Open.

Both are Spanish clay court specialists but it seems that David Ferrer is a level ahead of his opponent today. David Ferrer loves the clay court and has shown that he loves this venue. Last year he reached the final but lost to the clay court King Rafa Nadal. At the 2011 Barcelona Open, Ferrer did not drop a set until the final. He was no match for Rafael Nadal that day but will love to try again against Nadal.

At the tournament so far Ferrer has not dropped a set. He has won the first set of both his games 6-0. Another dominant start will see him comfortably through to the semi finals of the Barcelona Open, where he will face Murray or the young talent Raonic.

Two Spanish players clash in the first round of the 2012 Barcelona open and we should see the experienced Albert Montanes advance to the second round.

Albert Montanes has the experience on his side and the clay court is his favourite surface. He should show his class against the younger opponent and this should be a comfortable victory. Montanes showed how good he is on the clay court by beating the talented Raonic at the Madrid Masters.

Although Montanes is not in the same class as Ferrer, Verdasco and Almagr, he is certainly better than Gerard Granollers-Pujol. Gerard Granollers-Pujol is more known as his brothers doubles partner. He received a wildcard to the Barcelona Open last year but went out in the first round, winning just 1 game against Andujar.

With experience on his side, Montanes should easily defeat his opponent today.

Jon Jones Vs Rashad Evans

Boxing Jon Jones vs Rashad Evans

22/04 03:00

Everyone is excited about this fight. Can "Suga" Rashad Evans beat the seemingly invincible Jon "Bones" Jones? The odds are stacked firmly against Rashad Evans but I have to root for the underdog in this clash. Rashad Evans will be the toughest opponent Jon Jones has faced and Rashad Evans can use all his experience and superior wrestling ability to grind out a win on the judges scorecard.

What is interesting about this contest is these two are former teammates. Jones angered Evans when he said that he will be willing to fight his teammate. Former friends have turned into enemies and this will be a huge fight. Evans wants to win his title back and cement his place in UFC history as the man to beat Jon Jones.

The key to Rashad Evans winning this fight is his wrestling. His wrestling was present in his last fight against Phil Davis. Phil Davis is a great wrestler himself and Rashad took him down and blocked his takedown attempts successfully.

Rashad Evans is a great wrestler and an incredible striker. Although it will be difficult to get inside and use his striking ability against Jones, Evans can use his experience to win this on the judges scorecard.

After a disappointing Chinese Grand Prix, Kimi Raikkonen can get himself back onto that Formula One podium today in Bahrain.

Kimi Raikkonen's return to Formula 1 has not got off to the greatest of starts. However, he has finished in the points positions twice this season and the Lotus car looks to be improving. In Australia he started in 18th and managed to finish in 5th position. In Malaysia he finished qualifying in 5th position but due to a gearbox change, he was given a 5 place grid penalty. He managed to finish in 5th place that race.

Disaster struck in China when Raikonnen's tyres began to wear out. From 2nd place, Raikonnnen dropped to 12th in the space of 2 laps. He finished the race in 14th place.

Ahead of Bahrain, Raikonnen felt that a podium place was possible. He has a tough task as he will start from 11th on the grid. Raikonnen is optimistic and believes the decision to do one lap in Q2 was the right one.

It will be tough, but with a bit of luck, Raikonnen can find himself in a podium position.
